The European zone (UEFA) of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualification consists of 53 National Teams, divided into 8 groups of 6 teams, and 1 group of 5 teams.
UEFA Qualification Group 1: Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, Hungary, Albania, Malta
UEFA Qualification Group 2: Greece, Israel, Switzerland; Moldova, Latvia, Luxembourg
UEFA Qualification Group 3: Czech Republic, Poland, Northern Ireland, Slovakia, Slovenia, San Marino
UEFA Qualification Group 4: Germany, Russia, Finland, Wales, Azerbaijan, Liechtenstein
UEFA Qualification Group 5: Spain, Turkey, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Armenia, Estonia
UEFA Qualification Group 6: Croatia, England, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Andorra
UEFA Qualification Group 7: France, Romania, Serbia, Lithuania, Austria, Faroe Islands
UEFA Qualification Group 8: Italy, Bulgaria, Republic of Ireland, Cyprus, Georgia; Montenegro
UEFA Qualification Group 9: Netherlands, Scotland, Norway, FYR Macedonia, Iceland
The highest ranked country in each qualification group automatically qualified for the 2010 soccer world cup, while all the second-placed national teams stood a chance to become one of the last 4 soccer teams to qualify.
Each of the second placed national teams played a home and away play-off matches to qualify and become of the European teams to play in the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup.
