10 Top Reasons Not to Miss The Fan Walk in Cape Town
There’s no reason to go anywhere but the Fan Walk to enjoy the spirit of the World Cup in Cape Town
Great entertainment – from Flaming vuvuzela’s to stilt walkers, Cape food and crazy drum & jembe players from two hours before the game until an hour after the game; A journey of colour and activity, building anticipation as you go, you won’t be blamed for stalling along the Fan Walk to take advantage of all on offer – but don’t stress, you can always come back. No ticket? No problem.
1-Flaming Vuvuzela’s!
The appeal is obvious! How often do you get to see the amazing sight of a 6 metre tall Vuvuzela shooting fireballs? Not often, and not a sight to be missed. Lights up the beginning of your journey at the beginning of the Fan Walk at Exchange Place in St. Georges Mall opposite the station on Heerengragt
2-A fantastic Parade two hours before the game starts!
Taking place two hours before all games at the Cape Town Stadium – the parade awes all in the grand style of new Orleans. This carnival-esque march includes stilt walkers, giant puppets and characters showing of Cape Town’s diverse culture, oddities, eccentricities, and talents. Colourful, entertaining and fun for all.
3-A vast array of Musicians
From Jembe drummers to the Gugulethu Tenors to a Vuvuzela band and much more, various locations on the Fan Walk showcase the best in music that Cape Town has to offer, as does the parade itself (be sure to catch the crooners on Buitengracht Bridge).
4-Fantastic Entertainers
Circus acts, Diski Dancers, Stilt walkers, Giant Puppets, Fire dancers and acrobats – what else needs to be said? Some have to be seen to be believed, try catch the parade’s Soccer Mama; and send us a pic... Showing off world class performance across the board, the walk provides something for young or old – and gives everyone a chance to experience the spirit of the World Cup.
5-‘’It’s beautiful here’’ and Points of Soccer Sculpture
The rainbow arch by Heath Nash frames the majestic Table Mountain from St Andrew’s Square (incredibly popular for family photographs). The square also showcases such World Cup soccer-inspired sculpture as the ‘Full-Cycle Tree’ and the ‘Wind Tree’. Perfect for photo opportunities, and even just to rest you legs.
6-Muizenberg meets Bo Kaap Vendor booths for food, fan fair and vuvuzela’s
Get your South African on! (alright, get you other countries on too) with vendor booths evocative of a Bo Kaap/Muizenberg/Township colour palette, selling popular soccer paraphernalia and arts & crafts. Vuvuzela, flags, whatever you’re looking for. Also get to meet some of the local businessmen that help make the World Cup the success for South Africa it is.
7- Great food on the go and Cape Cuisine
Walking, Vuvuzela blowing and Football mania is hungry work, so thank goodness the Walk has accommodated for that. The vendors themselves offer a range of Cape and international cuisine, for example the ever popular boerewors pies, vetkoek filled with curried mince or snoek and chips. Then of course there’s the range of restaurants along the Fan Walk at the end of Somerset to the Green Point traffic circle .
8- All the Bars & Restaurants along the way
Such as the Cape quarter on Somerset Road, offering you really everything you could need... The Fingerbar’s just above this, giving one of the best views in the city – and a great place to watch the game should you be without tickets. Further down there’s Cafe Sofia, offering fantastic tapa’s, and also the location where some outstanding live music can be heard. Cubana, Doppio, Bronx... there are plenty of places to celebrate the World Cup fever along Somerset, and indeed the whole route.
9- Awesome Murals and Pavement Art
Mural and soccer art displayed throughout Waterkant showcases some of the colour we’re so proud of in Cape Town, as well as our creative ability. Soccer inspired and flamboyant, see if you can spot them all, particularly the ‘Soccer Mama’ mural, the mother city’s visual representative.
10-Sky Beams and Lit Buildings
Shooting 40 metre dancing beams of light into the sky! May sound pretty fantastical, but the reailty is just as spectacular. Following the theme of lighting up the night, landmark and historical building will be illuminated along the route, allowing you to stop and survey them at your leisure, in all their glory.
