Cape Town’s fan walk hits record
FIFA Fan Fests™ and fan jols open at 13:00 for round-of-16, quarter-final, semi-final and final matches
The fifth 2010 FIFA World Cup™ match played at the Cape Town Stadium on 24 June 2010 saw a record number of 72 910 people use the fan walk to walk to and from the stadium, or just to share in the World Cup experience. It is estimated that there were over 100 000 people on and around the fan walk during the day.
The earliest 2010 FIFA World Cup™ games in from the round-of-16 onwards start at 16:00, so from Saturday 26 June the FIFA Fan Fests™ across the country, as well as the fan jols, are open from 13:00, and not 11:00. This includes the FIFA Fan Fest™ on the Grand Parade in Cape Town as well as the City’s four fan jols at Vygieskraal, Swartklip, the Bellville Velodrome and OR Tambo.
Just over 25 000 people visited the FIFA Fan Fest™ on 24 June 2010, most of whom were Dutch supporters dressed in their bright orange supporter colours. A total number of 63 093 people attended the match between the Netherlands and Cameroon in the Cape Town Stadium. Approximately 7 000 spectators used the MyCiTi shuttle service to travel to the stadium and 9 000 used it to return to the Civic Centre Station after the game.
The competition is expected to get more exciting each day as the tournament moves through the knock-out stages. Spectators are reminded to arrive at the stadium or public viewing areas early to be in time for the match. Stadium gates open 3.5 hours before kick-off and early arrival prevents congestion at stadium’s entrance gates. Fans are advised to travel light as security checks take longer when staff have to search large handbags and rucksacks. Rain jackets should be used when necessary, as umbrellas may not be taken into the stadium.
Residents and visitors should also continue using public transport to travel to and from the stadium or the public viewing areas on match days. Most importantly, remember to bring the World Cup gees!
