Celebrate with South African music

Never mind the Kick-off concert, Cape Town has the FIFA Fan Fest 2010! Locals and visitors can look forward to being entertained by a host of proudly South African musicians on the Grand Parade in Cape Town.

Expect performances by the likes of chart-topping duo Goldfish, R&B award-winning artist Loyiso, renowned jazz artist Robbie Jansen and Friends, the urban-pop group Gang of Instrumentals, pop and R&B artist Danny K, dance and pop outfit The Rockets and premier bands Freshlyground, Prime Circle, Flat Stanley and the Flash Republic, to name but a few. Be jazzed up on the opening performance by popular Afro-Jazz musician Jimmy Dludlu. Local is Lekker!

Drumming, dancing and juggling

During May 2010 Grand West’s Grand Arena in Cape Town held auditions especially for the FIFA Fan Fest. From over 3000 entrants (which included 246 acts and 1280 individual performers from across the metropole) a final selection of 162 were chosen to join the headlining acts on stage – be prepared for entertainment from imbongis to jugglers, magicians, rappers, rock bands, opera singers, drummers and dancers.  What a treat to be the first to see fresh emerging talent and what a platform to start on – the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa!

According to spokesperson and 2010 World Cup Project Co-ordinator Shameel Ho-Kim, “The finalists are all cultural ambassadors for our City who will furthermore be given the opportunity to perform for the world.  Visitors from almost every nation will be at the Fan Fest to see them on stage and we are confident they’ll do us proud.”

Top DJs, laser displays and local food

Over and above watching live bands and talented young performers, visitors can also expect to see top DJs and a world-class a laser light display.  Various days during the World Cup 2010 will also be themed to reflect different countries and occasions, such as Youth Day on 16 June 2010.

Food and refreshment kiosks will offer a taste of traditional Cape Town with dishes such as Malay chicken curry, lamb neck poitje, boerewors rolls and fish gourjons, along with perennial favourites like prego rolls, pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers and steaming hot soup.  Snacks, as well as hot and cold drinks will be on offer.  Wine and beer will be available for sale to visitors over the age of 18.

The biggest screen Cape Town has ever seen

But of course we cannot forget the real reason we are all there – for the soccer of course, everything else is just an added bonus!

All 64 World Cup matches will be screened on an enormous 74 sqm screen, first used by FIFA during the German World Cup. The screen is one of the biggest structures ever to be erected in South Africa and Cape Town’s soccer fans are bound to be all eyes.

Now that you have read all of this we hope you have your vuzuzelas ready, that you’re wearing your makarabas and have your team’s flag waving high because the FIFA World Cup is here! Feel It!
