Art exhibition by Jenny Nothard at Cafe Manhattan
Extravagant shapes take pride of place at this Cape Town art exhibition
Jenny Nothard was born and spent most of her childhood in Kimberley before she moved to Namibia. As there was no high school in Oranjemund she spent her senior school years at Rhenish in Stellenbosch, where art was one of her matric subjects.
Generally Jenny's work falls into two segments, i.e. women in various activities or just being and the sensual ripeness and colours of fruits and flowers combined with exotic cloths. Inevitably an African carving or mask contrives to place itself in all Jenny's still lives, carrying through her love of our continent and her place of birth.
A relatively new slant to her work is a series of paintings which are perhaps more formal, stylized and structured.
These paintings tell a story, which fires and stimulates the imagination of the viewer and leaves the outcome to their perceptions.
This is an area which she intends to pursue and refine, but while doing so she finds herself returning again and again to the “dancing people” and the abundance of flowers with their colours, and extravagant shapes.
