The German Language Centre presents The Miracle of Bern

The German Language Centre in Cape Town will be showing ‘Das Wunder von Bern’ - a movie by director Sonke Wortmann - starring Louis Klamroth and Peter Lohmeyer.

The year is 1954, the nation is now divided into two Germanys and the German people are still wallowing in a post-World War II slump.

Richard, a coal miner from Essen returns after nearly a decade of being a Soviet prisoner of war in Siberia. Meanwhile his wife, two sons and one daughter have reached a minimum standard of living without him. When he is unexpectedly repatriated in 1954, he has severe problems in reintegrating himself with his family and country.

His wife is running a small business, his eldest son has become a Communist challenging his father’s ideals of the Nazi time, his daughter flirts with - his former enemies British soldiers, and his 11-year-old son Matthias who never knew his father, admires a local football hero instead, Helmut Rahn of Rot-Weiß Essen.

Into this atmosphere of doom and gloom comes an opportunity for national redemption, as West Germany is about to return to the world stage and participate in the soccer World Cup in Switzerland. The filmmaker has very cleverly put together a heartwarming and tender story of how this international extravaganza helped to heal the nation and a dysfunctional German family, as they turn a new page and reestablish a genuine hope for their future.
