Cheesy pizza, thin-crust pizza, gluten-free pizza, and even vegan pizza
Last Update: 22 July 2020

2022: Try wood-fired pizza and Betrus Basson burgers at this floating eatery in Stellenbosch
---
Cheesy melt-in-your-mouth pizza, thin-crust pizza, a thick pizza pie, pizza with South African toppings, pizza with authentic Napolitan sauce… even vegan pizza with no cheese. We've found them all thanks to you, our readers. Here are the 15 best pizza spots, according to locals.
IT’S A MOTHER-DAUGHTER DUO
JOON is where you’ll find the “best pizza and the best people” according to Cherry Allen. By day, JOON operates as a restaurant and deli, delivering a host of frozen meals. By night, they deliver fresh, thin-based pizzas, handmade by June and her daughter, Lindsey from 4pm to 7:30pm. Capetonian Linda Oldert writes that it’s “simply sublime. I’m going to give up cooking and just buy from Joon”. Sue Harrison Owen agrees, claiming these are “the best and freshest pizzas ever”.

PROPER SOUTH AFRICAN TOPPINGS
For reader Paul Lawrence, “Pizza Khaya in Glencairn is the bomb”. Not only does Pizza Khaya serve up “truly South African” toppings, writes Deidre Van Der Merwe, but she also says they come with “a huge helping of friendly service”. With their new and improved menu, you should definitely try out their two crowd favourites, the Daaris Salami with sun-dried tomatoes and olives or their Trifecta with spinach and mushroom.

AUTHENTIC WOOD-FIRED PIZZAS
If you’re in the mood for a cheesy pizza by the sea then Satori in Kalk Bay has got you covered. Satori’s pizza, according to Willemien de Villiers, has “the thinnest crust and is the perfect wood-fired, melt-in-your mouth yumminess”. Vickey Rottgen agrees and writes that the restaurant only uses the freshest ingredients.

WHEN DISTANCE DOESN’T MATTER
Regan Ford would travel far and wide for a slice of M&D Pizza. “I drive all the way from Kensington to Mitchells Plain to buy my pizzas,” Ford writes. He added that “The family who owns the restaurant have been in the business for over three decades. Their pizzas are the tastiest in town, and they are generous with their toppings”.

THEY’RE DELICIOUS ALL YEAR ROUND
Although Si Kay says she’s “no linguist” she’s almost sure that Posticino’s Quattro Stagioni directly translates into “four seasons of deliciousness”. But, once you get a mouthful of ham, artichokes and mushrooms with melted cheese, which, according to Kay, “melts my heart”, the name won’t even matter.

THE HUNT IS OVER FOR THE TOP PIZZA SPOT
Leigh Stott has yet to find a better pizza spot. Always on the hunt for a good pizza, she says "Borruso’s for me has set the bar". Stott adds that "Not only is their pizza good but their lasagne is the best by miles! Cosy and festive atmosphere. Friendly staff. Can't wait to go there again".

ONE WORD: AWESOMENESS
For Jason Wright, Ashley's Family Restaurant in Kraaifontein has the "biggest and meanest pizzas around with toppings to die for and layers of goodness in every pizza". If he had to describe the pizzas in one word he'd use "awesomeness". Gradwill Scheepers has to agree, saying that "their variety and well-combined ingredients, with the woodfired ovens, makes for a mouthwatering experience".

IF IT’S GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE ITALIANS...
"Ferdinando's Pizza in Observatory is amazing. Even their simplest margherita pizza is so flavourful and fresh" says Cam Skerritt. "It's the bomb diggity" Emma Penfold adds, and Alessandra Briguglio agrees, writing that even "an Italian recommends it". If you want to try something new, Ferdinando’s Pizza’s Croccante vegan pizza with roman artichokes, rocket, cherry tomatoes and a dollop of hummus is a firm crowd favourite.

LET'S GET FANCY
If you're in the mood for something a little fancier than your usual pizza, Annette Delport recommends Greens in Plattekloof Village Centre. Delport loves their "gourmet pizzas with a thin crispy base and interesting and delicious toppings like smoked chicken, brie and cranberry and pear or blue cheese and caramelized onions". If these toppings don't pique your interest, you can adjust and add your own with Greens home-cooked pizza hampers.

THE DIFFERENCE IS IN THE DOUGH
At RELOAD in Blouberg, they do things a bit differently. The chefs have swapped out the usual yeast pizza dough for a more chewy and textured sourdough base, and Candyce Bester is here for it. "It's the best sourdough pizza in Cape Town. I've eaten pizza in Rome, Florence, Pisa and Livorno in Italy and I can hand on heart say that RELOAD at Leadville is world-class", Bester told us.

WOOD-FIRED GLUTEN FREE HALAAL PIZZAS
When it comes to pizza, The Butcher's Wife in Athlone has it all, and Michele Wintle Ressel agrees. Ressel says the pizzas are "woodfired with excellent bases, delicious and innovative toppings, gluten-free base options, fresh ingredients, halaal and they're available for collection or delivery". Even if you’ve been before, make your way back to sample one of their three new gourmet pizzas.

YOUR STOMACH WILL THANK YOU
Candice Lategan says that the pizza from Bin Rashied "literally makes my mouth water just thinking about it, it tastes like mmmm more". Roger Ward agrees and writes that "the taste is the best. They have amazing variety, the best ingredients, and they're not stingy with the toppings". In case you're looking for a tasty side dish Ward also says Bin Rashied has "the best garlic pita and Chita ever".

ROCK ‘N ROLL PIZZA
If you gotta Whole Lotta Love for pizza then SGT Pepper will rock you. Putting a tasty twist on the classics, each pizza is personified in line with the bar’s rock ‘n roll vibe. From the spicy smiles of Tannie Tandoori to the wonderful wiles of the Wild Thing. Reader Nandipha Nandokuhle Masiko loves the thin bases.

A LITTLE BIT OF ITALY IN HOUT BAY
If you can't travel to Italy, Chane Cardoso has found one pizza spot that could get you pretty close. "Massimo's in Hout Bay is unbeatable. I'm still thinking about the last pizza I had there. It's like a little taste of Italy in SA", Cardoso writes. Plus, next time you order, try out one of their charity dishes and Massimo's will donate part of the costs to a local charity.

HOLY S***, YOU CANNOT BEAT THESE PIZZAS
CapeTownMag reader Shelley-Anne Dean has some strong feelings about The Toad. "Holy shit, you just cannot beat their pizzas”, she claims. “Even living now in the UK, pizzas here aren't as good as The Toad’s". The first thing Dean's going to do when she gets back to Cape Town is to visit The Toad in Noordhoek, and who could blame her? Their crowd favourite pizza, appropriately called The Crowd Favourite, is loaded with bacon, feta, mushroom and avocado.
