UK indie heavyweights set to rock the Cape
Who is Miss K?
Beautiful food inspired by Cape Town
Meet Miss K Food Café. She’s named after her owner, Kirsten Zschokke; a Silwood graduate who collaborated with her sister, Lee Ann. Since opening in 2008, Green Point’s bustling neighbourhood café has added a splash of street cafe sophistication. She’s clean, simple, light and bright. She’s certainly charmed the locals, but did she charm us?
What do we think of the décor?
Miss K is a lot larger than one would outwardly expect. The interior is a long narrow space that could easily seat 65-70 patrons. It’s ulta-modern; clean whites, open, light and bright, with stylish murals. Kirsten tells me that she drew her inspiration from Cape Town itself – a city she regards as beautiful and open. The décor is kept simple, so that the food stands out in splashes of colour (the décor serves its purpose, as the first thing we noticed was the stunning cake display). The kitchen is open and watching chefs at work certainly adds to the dining experience. As it was a sunny day, we chose to sit at their terrace, with views of Main Road and the Cape Town Stadium.
Our verdict? It’s funky, modern, urban and relaxing.
What do we think of the food?
Miss K offers a hefty range of breakfasts; for lunch, salads, sandwiches and buffet options and; for naughty treats, a range of decadent pastries (including giant, pistachio-dusted meringues). My carrot juice was freshly squeezed and went down rather refreshingly on a warm day (R25). We were also eyeing up their Lindt Chocolate Milkshake. We opted to share our lunch, so we could get a good idea of taste. I pounced on the lunch buffet, piling chunks of fresh, grilled Kabeljou onto my plate, with complements of sesame, carrot, cucumber and mixed pulse salad (priced by weight). It was a simple, light dish, with melt-in-the-mouth seafood. My friend opted for one of the more popular sandwiches: seared rare beef fillet, mustard, caramelized onions and horseradish (R66). It was layered on three slices of bread. You can get so much satisfaction from a sandwich that is slightly too large – tender beef fillet and caramelized onions proved quite the taste explosion.
Our verdict? The price is mid-range, but you’re certainly paying for quality. Light, simple and yummy.
What else do they do?
Miss K set up a stall at the Neighbour Goods Market six months ago, in order to let the rest of the world know just how gorgeous their food is. There are a variety of cakes, muffins, rolls, wraps, flat breads and soups on offer.
Miss K also offer bespoke catering for private functions and weddings and can cater for groups of 10-85. Their services even include set-up and waiting staff and the café is available to hire for after-hours functions. They catered for Cape Town’s Bridal Fare, in March 2010.
