Sweet Delights at My Sugar Chocolate and Coffee Shop in Sea Point

Indulge in decadent treats of all shapes, colours and sizes at this one-of-a-kind spot in Cape Town

I’m not even exaggerating when I say that there is literally chocolate everywhere. I mean, I knew I was stepping into a confectionery store, but this is some delightfully next -level stuff. The sweet spot is appropriately called My Sugar, and it is a new chocolate and coffee shop situated on Regent Road in the heart of Sea Point that is dedicated to treating inhabitants of the Mother City to multi-coloured and tasty handmade sugary treats.

Launched towards the end of May 2015, this chocolate-meets-coffee shop is the brainchild of lovely 23-year-old chocolatier and pastry chef Kaylah Greenberg. Her warmth and bubbly personality is felt from the moment I enter the door as she chats to a few customers who are asking her some rather interesting questions about their chocolate purchases. I wave, she waves, offers me some coffee and gently ushers me into her candied world.

“While I was studying as a pastry chef, I got the lovely opportunity to take on a chocolate making course at the same time, and as I stepped into the kitchen, I knew that was it for me,” explains the young entrepreneur who co-runs the venue with her partner, who is also a chef, Asher Isaacs.

Kaylah is absolutely in love with chocolate (who could blame her) and she explains that one of the reasons is because the art of chocolate-making is incredibly scientific: “There’s no back peddling or fiddling – you really only get to see how your skills fared all the way at the end of the product.” It turns out that this art is so precise, that even one mistake can compromise the taste, texture (it has a lot to do with crystals at their molecular level) and even the ease at which the chocolate breaks when you snap it.

And of course, once you snap (or choose to bite) the chocolate, the flavour- filled experience begins. Those with a sweet tooth can indulge in a seemingly endless array of decadent handcrafted goods to their hearts’ content. The selection ranges from classic items like Turkish delight, to the more unusual and wacky choices- which Kaylah has noticed are the ones that many people have taken a liking to- like the Caramello-Buddha (a combination of miso-caramel with crushed peanuts in milk chocolate- and in the caricature of a Buddha), the My Honey Thyme (a thyme and honey infused ganache in a creamy white chocolate), the Salty Sweet Pretzel Bark (a pretzel covered in sticky caramel topped with chocolate), and the chocolatier’s personal favourite, the Choc-Work Orange – a sticky orange ganache (made with actual oranges) in dark chocolate. There’s also a small range of eats like caramel popcorn, cruffins (croissants in muffin form) that visitors can nibble on.

These melt-in-your-mouth sensations can also be paired either with the shop’s exclusive coffee (they have their own blend, aptly named My Sugar), which has an intriguing flavour profile that’s enough to give you that boost of energy, but is also not too strong on the palate, to their single origin bean selection, which will change from time to time – giving anyone that becomes a regular customer an element of sweet surprise.

Speaking of which, one of the most interesting surprises was finding out that chocolate actually used to be served as a beverage and was even referred to as the ‘drink of the gods’ back in Aztec times. This was because the liquid seemed to have ‘supernatural powers’ that would revitalise warriors’ energies after long battles. That magic seems to have carried over to My Sugar, as the spot really does have some sort of stimulating effect. It could be the hues of brown and gold on the wall, or the wooden games placed on each table, or even the chocolate itself, all I know is that I’m beginning to feel warm inside.

And once I prepare to leave, I can’t help but be inspired by Kaylah’s passion to bring an experimental and fun edge to the chocolate industry. As I make my way out, a customer jokingly asks her whether folk can expect chocolate pizza as an offering soon, to which she responds, “Well, that’s actually not a bad idea.”

Tip: My Sugar takes special orders for chocolate gift ideas and also does deliveries in special circumstances. For more information, call +27 (0) 21 433 2335 or email sugar@mysugar.co.za

The Bill: The handcrafted treats are reasonably priced with each small piece of chocolate ranging from R5 to R20, and the large chocolates ring in at R30. Coffees are priced between R17 and R22, hot chocolate is R25, while confectionery items like caramel popcorn and cruffins range between R10 and R25.
