Ho ho how to celebrate Christmas in July

The cold weather is all the excuse we need

Christmas, my child, is love in action. Every time we love, every time we give, it's Christmas. -Dale Evans Rogers

We Capetonians are used to Christmases spent poolside sipping on cocktails while the family gathers around the smoking braai. No cosy cheer for us, but luckily we get to celebrate it a second time on 25 July with all the warm frills that accompany a traditional Northern Christmas.

Here are some tips to help you on your merry way on things to do in Christmas in July.

You’ll need a fruitcake, sometimes a term of endearment for a family member, at other times a rich cake crammed with fruit and spices traditionally eaten at Christmas. John and Lynne Ford from Main Ingredient make a batch every year, give them a call to order yours (+27 (0)21 439 3169).

Decorate a tree. Now since it’s actually a mini Christmas, you may as well have a smaller tree too. Go green and buy a bonsai or a small conifer, and once you’re done using it as a decoration you can move it outside.

It ain’t festive, if there aren’t any bubbles. We highly recommend the Méthode Cap Classiques from Môreson, and Quoin Rock. Perfect for toasting in the Yuletide cheer.

Warm those Christmas in July cockles with homemade eggnog. We found a traditional eggnog recipe that should keep you, ahem, in high spirits. While you're at it, whip up a batch of Gluhwein too.

There you have it, gather your friends and family for a fine ‘ol Christmassy time. And if you’re not in the mood to do it yourself join in on these events to make winter in July all the more better.
