Cape Town Green Week

Mother City set to be greenest business city

The City of Cape Town will host Green Week from October 19 to October 23 2009 and during this week Cape Town will be one of the greenest business cities on Earth. The City of Cape Town joins hands with the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) and a range of partner organisations for an action-packed Green Week.

Green Week in Cape Town will coincide with UNEP FI’s first ever Global Roundtable in Africa, to be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from 22 October to 23 October 2009. UNEP FI is the largest and oldest partnership between the UN system and the world of banking, insurance and investment.

During Green Week hundreds of financiers, investors, business leaders, built environment and property professionals from around the world and across Africa, joined by green groups, will gather at the CTICC for a week-long series of events exploring how a green approach to business can create jobs, protect the environment and build better, fairer communities with towns and cities that work.

Cape Town’s Green Week will put the city at the centre of the global green business revolution just six weeks ahead of a crucial United Nations Climate Change summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, when the governments of the world will map out their response to the perils of global warming.

Cape Town Green Week will also enable African finance, business, civil society and green groups to send a strong ‘calling for action' message to the historic UN gathering in Copenhagen.

In addition to appealing to business to make a difference, Green Week also calls to the public to get involved and be more environmentally responsible. The week-long campaign calls for each individual to do their bit and take responsibility for their actions.

Capetonians are urged to take active steps to reduce their carbon footprint and work alongside the City of Cape Town to develop an on-going plan of action against global warming.
