President declares 18th May a public holiday

All voters may participate in Local Government Elections

President Jacob Zuma has declared 18th May 2011 a public holiday, to enable voters to participate on the day of local government elections.

On 3rd March 2011, South African acting president, Kgalema Motlanthe, announced that the Local Government Elections will be held mid-week, on Wednesday, 18th May 2011.

A statement released by the presidency, on 16th March, said: “In terms of section 2A of the Public Holidays Act (1994), President Jacob Zuma has declared 18th May 2011 as a public holiday throughout the republic.”

The president wishes all political parties well as they prepare for elections.
