As we enter into a new year, one of Cape Town’s most beloved annual celebrations is once again kicking off on 2 January 2024. The Tweede Nuwe Jaar parade by the Kaapse Klopse attracts tens of thousands of spectators as they walk through the city centre with their colourful, sequenced outfits, painted faces, instruments, parasols and more.
The Kaapse Klopse will do their yearly parade through the city in a longstanding tradition. Image: Cape Town Street Parade
The opening ceremony begins at 1.30pm and people can begin to gather from 12pm. It’s best to arrive as early as possible to secure a front spot to have full views of the parade. With an estimated 20 000 performers, the route will begin in District Six along Hanover Street and finish in Rose Street, Bo-Kaap. There are a number of different performing troupes, all following each other with enough time to enjoy every performance.
Check the official social media pages for more info. Image: Cape Town Street Parade
The street parade will have free entry with four grandstands (196 seats per stand) for seating, which will operate on a first come, first serve basis. With some people planning to camp overnight for a good spot, upwards of 50 000 spectators are anticipated to be out in support of the Kaapse Klopse. Try to arrive as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Spectators are welcome to bring blankets, cooler boxes, and foldable chairs to be comfortable. No glass is permitted so please make sure that any snacks are in non-glass containers, such as tins or plastic. Other banned items include weapons, alcohol, and drugs. A general rule is to be mindful of others and to enjoy this celebration of Cape culture.
Enjoy the day with clean fun. Image: Cape Town Street Parade
Be sure to check the various road closures in and around the city centre on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 and look for updates via the parade’s social media pages. All roads listed below will be closed from 6am January 2nd to 12am January 3rd.
