Dead Man Walking, the internationally acclaimed opera, will be presented by Cape Towns executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato at the Artscape Opera House to raise funds for the Mayor’s Relief Fund.
The Opera is based on the best selling novel by Sister Helen Prejean, the spiritual advisor to the convicted murderer of a teenage couple. Her prize winning book is based on their incredible emotional interaction while preparing for death row in Louisiana, USA. Dead Man Walking remained at number one in the New York Times Best Seller List for 31 weeks and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
The Film version, starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn won an Oscar and earned several other nominations.
The cutting-edge opera, Dead Man Walking, became an overnight success when it opened it the US and became the fastest selling opera production in recent history.
The Mayor’s Relief Fund was founded by the Council of Cape Town as a relief and charitable fund to deal with requests for grants, donations, and financial assistance. Over the years it has been utilized to fund funeral costs of children who have died as a result of a criminal act or violent crime.
The Fund also gives assistance for drug rehabilitation programmes, specialized medical care for children and various charities dedicated to the care of children and the aged.
