The prestigious World Press Photo competition comes to Cape Town with an exhibition at the Castle of Good Hope from Friday 27 January - Thursday 17 February. The judging of this esteemed competition, now in its 55th year will begin on Saturday 28 January 2012. The results of the contest will be announced on 10 February in a press conference at the Amsterdam City Hall and online.
This unique travelling exhibition will showcase previous winners of the prestigious World Press Photo Competition. This will include the work of two South Africans, Jodi Bieber and Mike Hutchings. Bieber won the World press Photo of the Year 2010 and Hutchings received the award for the top sports image of the year.
What is the World Press Photo about?
World Press Photo is an independent, nonprofit organization based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where World Press Photo was founded in 1955. Its main aim is to support and promote the work of professional press photographers internationally. Over the years, World Press Photo has evolved into an independent platform for photographers and the free exchange of world relevant and current information.
Education also plays an important role in the association’s activities. Seminars and workshops open to individual photographers, photo agencies and picture editors are organized in developing countries. The annual Joop Swart Master class, held in the Netherlands, is aimed at talented photographers at the start of their careers.
What to expect at the Wold Press Photo Exhibition in Cape Town
Each year, an independent international jury, consisting of nineteen members, judges the entries in nine different categories, submitted by photographers, agencies, newspapers and magazines from all corners of the world. The 2011 contest attracted 5,691 photographers from 125 countries. In total 108,059 images were entered in the contest.
The annual exhibition is circulated each year, travelling around the world from country to country. The 2011 show was held at more than 100 venues all over the world, displaying over 160 photographs, comprising of the year’s winning photo and the award-winning images from each of the nine contest categories. The high quality of visual expression, story relay and general world issue sensibility involved is considered to raise the standard each year in the related fields of the medium.
Commenting on the sponsorship former Investec chairman Hugh Herman said: “Investec is honoured to be associated with the biggest and only truly global photojournalism exhibition. The World Press Photo Exhibition encompasses the bank’s commitment to the arts and our drive for excellence. We are particularly pleased to highlight the outstanding, work-class work of our South African photographers, Jodi Bieber and Mike Hutchings. “
