Now in its tenth year, the Kirstenbosch Botanical Art Biennale has become a popular show drawing enthusiastic crowds to the gardens.
The main focus this year will be on rare, endangered and narrow endemic species indigenous to southern Africa.
The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) recently launched the new Red List of South African Plants. Their Threatened Species Programme is endeavouring to help conserve South Africa’s plant species. Through the Botanical Art Biennale, SANBI intends to highlight and stimulate interest about the plight of these plants to the public.
The theme provides a wonderful challenge, encouraging artists to build relationships with conservation organisations, scientists, artists and horticulturists.
This year’s show now includes ceramics, tapestry & embroidery and the work of renowned artists working on the themes of conservation and destruction of the environment.
The revival of Botanical art in recent years is reflected in contemporary trends in interior décor and art collections. The Biennale provides a space where the public and collectors can view the best examples of botanical art.
New to the Biennale is a youth programme encouraging high school pupils to enter an art competition. Visitors will be able to purchase beautifully made ceramic pots filled with succulents made by Light from Africa ceramicists (a non profit organisation based at Constantia Nek).
In addition, Ardmore Ceramics from KwaZulu Natal are preparing an exquisite range of their highly original pieces - this will include beautiful evocations of local flora and associated pollinators.
Finally, the renowned artists from the Keiskamma art project will be making unique wall hangings featuring the rare and endangered plants of the Eastern Cape.
