Nineteen time English premier league champions Manchester United will take on Ajax Cape Town at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, 21 July 2012 in a pre-season friendly scheduled to keep South Africa on the international football map.
The match between the Red Devils (Man United) and the Urban Warriors (Ajax) is also a bid to pay homage to Nelson Mandela on his 94th birthday; the city has reported that it’s going to try to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the number of people singing collectively in one place by urging a packed out stadium to sing “Happy Birthday” to South Africa’s first ANC president.
Man United’s visit to Mzansi shores will be the first since 2008, and with a passionate following in both the Cape Flats and the townships, there’s likely to be very few empty seats in the Green Point stadium (regardless of whether or not the high-profile English team brings its first string).
For those unlucky enough to miss the match, some of Manchester United’s top stars and coaching staff will host a coaching clinic for youngsters over the course of the two days prior to the game, an event that will be followed by an open training session.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early via the MyCiti bus (click here for routes and fares) to avoid traffic and congestion. The Fan Walk will also be re-opened, which means partial road closures in Green Point.
Tickets are available through Computicket.com and will go on sale on Monday 25 June.
Ticket prices:
Category 1 - R350
Category 2 - R250
Category 3 - R150
*Tickets for the Manchester United open training session at 19:00 on 20 July will be made available on Monday, 25 June 2012, at R20p/p (10 000 tickets will be available).
