After breaking box office records during its recent season starring Nicholas Hoult at London’s Trafalgar Studios, New Boy now comes to the NewSpace Theatre for a limited season from 19th October to 15th November 2009.
New Boy Director Russell Labey adapted the play from the novel by William Sutcliffe and he will be in South Africa to recreate his original production with an all South African cast, which will be announced shortly.
New Boy tells the story of Mark, a 17-year old adolescent who is anxious to finally get his sex life jump-started. When the very attractive “new boy” Barry begins classes at Mark’s all boys school, the two become fast friends.
This new relationship allows Mark the opportunity to experience his hormonal aspirations vicariously through Barry’s exploits. Barry meanwhile, has no problem seducing members of the opposite sex. Be it the students of the neighbouring girls school, or members of the faculty, Barry’s sexual ventures run fast and furious.
Through it all, the two boys develop a very close bond that could ultimately change the course of their lives.
Russell Labey is a well-known British playwright who was a Script Editor on the Gus Van Sant film Milk starring Sean Penn. He next directs Wolfboy at Edinburgh and My Fair Lady at Cambridge. He will direct and devise the annual Whatsonstage Awards, and has won the TMA Award for Whistle Down the Wind. He was also resident director on Sunset Boulevard & Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
So don’t miss this unique opportunity and see Russell Labey’s play at the Newspace Theatre.
