Rebranding the Nation: 2010 Lecture Series

From "Collective Depression" to "The Most Successful World Cup Ever"

Five million unemployed people, rampant xenophobia, a dramatic decrease in investment and a soccer team supported by just eight percent of the nation. A nation described by its president as entering “collective depression”.

This was Germany two years before the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Yet the country turned its fortunes around so dramatically that it produced “the best World Cup of all time. Never before has an event been presented in such an emotional and global manner” – this was the ovation given by FIFA President Sepp Blatter to the host country at the end of the tournament.

Dr Nikolaus Eberl, author of the bestselling book Brand Ovation: How Germany won the World Cup of Nation Building, presents the fascinating journey of how Germany became a nation charged with a sense of pride and common destiny and the world’s most admired country brand. Economists have dubbed its economic turnaround “The Second Economic Miracle”.

Dr Eberl, whose work has received acclaim from eminent South African leaders, is engaged in internal branding for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and will, as part of the 2010 Lecture Series at the Green Point Stadium Visitor Centre, talk about the seven key pillars of a Brand Pride Campaign that will transform the soul of South Africa.

The 2010 Lecture Series is a bi-monthly series of lectures by speakers who are integrally involved in the planning and implementation of national projects towards 2010, whose views are of special interest to the public.
