The Wavescape Surf Film Festival

Your chance to catch a film instead of a wave this December in Cape Town

Surfers embark on a campaign to save our seas in the annual Wavescapes Surf Film Festival that rides a summer wave through Cape Town early this December.

Wavescapes - presented
by the Save Our Seas Foundation - runs for 18 days between 2 and 20 December 2009.

The opening film of the festival will be projected onto a large screen under the stars at tourist mecca Clifton Fourth Beach on Friday December 11 from 21h00 to 22h30.

Last year, this screening attracted 3,000 people to what has been described as the most beautiful cinema in the world.

A week of films will be on show at the Labia Cinema – from 18h00 and 20h00 - in the city and at a seaside surfer hangout, the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay – from 21h00.

The festival includes the Wavescapes Surf Art Exhibition, a special exhibition of decorated surfboards by acclaimed artists such as Brett Murray, Konradski, Andre Trantaal and Sue Opperman which will run from December 2 to 8 at the trendy Cape Town restaurant Depasco, from 17h00 – 19h00.

The last exhibition will
be followed by a gala art auction by comedian Mark Sampson on December 9. Proceeds of the auction go to ocean charities, including the NSRI and Shark Spotters.

A broad mix of surfing films will be screened, from beautiful and poetic eulogies about waves and the heroes of the surfing sub-culture to the darker side of surfing.

Some of the films and documentaries that will be screened during the Film Festival:

- Sea of Darkness
- Searching for Michael Peterson
- High Water
- Black People Don’t Swim
- Fly in the Champagne
- Glacier Project
- Creation Plantation
- Musica Surfica

A total of 16 films will be screened at the festival.

The screening at Clifton Beach is free, and R25p/p at the Labia and Brass Bell.
