Balkanology: The Reunion

Cape Town’s legendary Eastern European-themed party returns with a next-level jol at the Sideshow

After a year's hiatus this much-loved Balkan boogie returns to the Mother City’s Sideshow club (old Vaudeville) on Saturday, 6 September to bring followers a party that even Borat would find wild.

As Balkanology, which is famed for bringing revelers somewhat eccentric entertainment, mesmerising Easter Europen-inspired tracks and mindbending set-ups, disappeared off the radar for an entire 12 months, you may have some questions.

Will there be farm animals? A funeral? A wedding? Wizards? Magicians and more? The answers are yes, yes and YES!

As in the past the gypsy-style get-down promises ridiculous, Romanian-tinged theatrical performances and killer sets by resident DJs, including Israeli impresario Maoriginal and Capetonian techno/swing beat masher Toby2Shoes (AKA Toby Atwell). The pair, who in fact masterminded both the Balkonology series and the satellite event Fiddle East, will also be joined by the Kolo Novo Movie Band – an eclectic mult-instrumental group hailing from the Mother City.

This year the dress code is black tie – so be prepared to suit up in style!

TICKETS TO BALKANOLOGY: THE REUNION

Tickets for the event are available online via Webtickets.co.za and cost R130p/p.

WHAT IS BALKANOLOGY?

This Cape Town-based collective is known for organizing manic parties featuring renowned local DJs and live musicians performing a fusion of Gypsy, Serbian, Macedonian, Bulgarian and Romanian melodies. After attending a ‘No Smoking Orchestra’ concert in 2004, Ma’or Harris, Balkanology’s founder, was so taken with the music and energy of the band and crowds that he made it his mission to bring the frenzy back to Africa. Nowadays, the Balkanology team creates elaborate theme parties to transport audiences into another world, an achievement that’s garnered near cult status in Cape Town.
