It may sound like a simple student game, but beer pong can provide hours of intoxicating entertainment for almost anyone. And because The Forex Bar in Cape Town’s Observatory recognises just how much fun this drinking challenge can be, the vibey Southern Suburbs bar has dedicated an entire evening to the activity.
So, every Thursday night, starting at 9pm, Forex, as it’s known by its growing group of regulars, hosts a spirited contest that challenges teams of two to test their throwing and drinking skills against one another. The pub is decked with four beer pong tables, both inside and on its outside beach-style deck. There is no limit to the number of squads that can enter, which means the competition for the winning title is particularly tough.
The booze-fuelled game is a great reflection of the bar’s key objective in action – to encourage merry exchange and interaction between visiting foreigners and locals. That is, beer pong was originally introduced to Forex by American patrons who are all too familiar with the pastime from university days, and now the liquored-up version of ping pong has been eagerly taken on by Capetonians and other Forex guests.
And the pub has seriously adopted all the associated US rules, regulations and customs too. In fact, the second-storey hotspot even imported official red solo cups from the States to ensure players get to experience the best, closest to original, game of beer pong possible. Contestants start their round by purchasing huge 2L pitchers of brew as they would at American pubs and beer halls (there’s also the rather dangerous option of playing wine or Tipo Tinto pong).
Of course, guests can also soak up the ale-filled evening with snacks including some authentic American fare such as bacon wrapped onion rings, curly fries and battered pickles, as well as other international and local dishes. The sweetest part of all, however, has to be the possibility of winning the R200 bar tab that’s awarded weekly to the victorious team and getting the glory of being named beer pong kings for a full week until the Thursday madness starts again seven days later.
How The Forex Bar’s beer pong contest works
Teams can register for the competition at the bar anytime during the week up until 9pm on the evening of the contest (it’s fine to just arrive on the night and put your name down). The games then kick off at 9pm and continue late into the night when the last two remaining groups battle it out and the winner is crowned. There is no entrance fee; contestants are simply required to buy their own beer to play (between R110 and R170 for a 2L pitcher).
Tip: If thinking is more your thing than drinking, visit The Forex Bar every Tuesday night from 7:30pm when the pub hosts their popular trivia competitions! The quiz is FREE to join and the winner walks away with a R200 pour-your-own-beer card from Forex.
