Get the hot rods ready, curl your hair and dust off your best frocks! That’s right folks, the fourth Dusty Rebels and the Bombshells Rockin' & Riding Festival revs onto the summer calendar and pulls into the Cape Town Ostrich Farm (just 25-km outside of the Mother City on the N7) on Saturday, 12 November 2016.
Still not sure what the old-school Americana festival is all about? Allow us to school you. The family-friendly lifestyle event is all about mid-1900s American style and flair that celebrates fashion, food, music, cars, motorcycles and more. Think hotrods, tattoos, denim and rock 'n roll.
This year’s hoedown invites anyone looking for an exciting time to an out-of-this-world fiesta jam-packed with all last year’s favourite features as well as some awesome added extras.
If you’re still not quite convinced that this rockin’ celebration is worth checking out, here’s what to expect reasons to rock out with your white socks out along the West Coast!
WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2016 DUSTY REBELS AND THE BOMBSHELLS ROCKIN' & RIDING FESTIVAL
LEAD THE ROCKABILLY LIFE: Dolls and dudes, greasers and gals, if you’re a cool cat and down with the life, then this is just for you. This shindig both embraces those completely enmeshed in the rockabilly way and offers fledgling initiates a chance to brush up on the fashion, etiquette and ethos of the movement.
SIDESTEP AND SWING TO HOT ROCK 'N ROLL TUNES: Once again, the organisers have pulled out all stops when it comes to the music line-up, securing headline act Martin Rocka and the Sick Shop, much to the delight of Cape Town audiences. He’ll be joined by Lonesome Dave Ferguson, The Ratrod Cats, Three More White Guys, The Dixie Pricks, Gunshot Blue, Dan Valley and the Countrymen, not to mention a special appearance by Cape Town rock icons Taxi Violence.
CHECK OUT THE CHARIOTS: A large part of the culture revolves around cars, motorcycles and pretty much anything with a V8 engine. The car display features rockabilly roadsters from the 40s until the early 60s; find classics, hot rods, rat rods (modified hot rods), V8s and others on show. Not to mention a healthy dose of customised choppers, bikes and other two- and four-wheeled vehicles which are sure to get youre engines revving! For those who’d like to show off their cool cat rides, visit Dustyrebelsandthebombshells.co.za. New to the festival this year is the skateboard and BMX mini ramp, where talented riders will demonstrate their skills, or attendees can kick-flip and catch some air themselves.
LICK YOUR HAIR BACK, PIN UP YOUR DO AND PUCKER UP: If you don’t have the threads, get the look. MAC Cosmetics and Scar are on site and will offer FREE rockabilly hairdos and lip and eyeliner to transform any stuffy Sandy into a sassy Pink Lady. What’s more, guys can unleash the Danny Zuko within with the help of skilled barbers at the pop-up Barnet Fair Barber Shop; do note that stylists will charge a fee for trims and cuts.
MISS BOMBSHELL BETTY PIN-UP PAGEANT: A pin-up is a prim and proper gal with a twist, think of the Vargas girls. The Blue Haired Betty will be hosting the second edition of the Miss Bombshell Betty pin-up pageant, with ten sassy finalists from all over the country; we look forward to seeing who will be crowned the Miss Bombshell Betty 2016.
DRESS THE PART: Whether you’re adding to your wardrobe or looking to start a rockabilly couture collection, you’ll find plenty of clothing and accessories from top-notch vendors at the festival. Retrospective Cape Town will put on a fine fashion show so you can catch a glimpse of thier finest threads. The fair will also have a special Levi's Tailor shop, as well as air brush tattoos, food trucks, a Jack Daniels bar, a fun fair and much more.
BRINGING SEXY BACK: No, we’re not talking about gyrating pop icons; see sexy sirens bare it all on stage when the burlesque dancers from the Black Orchid Burlesque HQ unveil the art of taking off just enough to pop those collars and pique interests.
