Folk Rock Heroes at On Broadway

Musical director Mike McCullagh pays tribute to folk music and some of the artists who first began the musical trend

Join On Broadway and Mike McCullagh in Folk-Rock Hero and celebrate folk music that has been around since the middle ages but was first blended with rock in the 1960’s.

As a music form, folk-rock is epitomized by tight harmonies and distortion-free guitar coupled with free-flowing drums and bass. Generally, its overall influence on popular music has been underestimated even though it has led to many songs that are today regarded as classics.

McCullagh has drawn together talented young Capetonians to take audiences on a musical journey from the birth of folk-rock in the 60's all the way through to the 90's. Naturally, the audience is encouraged to sing, dance or participate throughout the highly energetic performances.

The show bears tribute to renowned folk-rock heroes like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Jim Croce, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Byrds, The Mamas and the Papas, Simon and Garfunkel, The Turtles, Steeleye Span, The Strawbs, Jethro Tull and The Dubliners. Also included are rock legends that have regularly included folk-rock on their albums and in their live performances. These include bands such as The Beatles, The Eagles, U2 and Creedence Clearwater Revival [CCR].

The all-star cast is ably led by Mike himself on drums and percussion, Riaan Cornelius, Lucy Holgate and Kevin Abbott on lead vocals and guitars, Neil Peyton on bass and Lorenzo Bastiaan on lead guitar.
