The Forex Bar, in the multicultural suburb of Observatory, is dedicated to helping guests become a little more worldly-wise. And so every Tuesday evening the vibrant Southern Suburbs haunt hosts a trivia night that both tests visitors’ knowledge and teaches players fun facts.
Kicking off at 8pm, the weekly pub quiz is specifically designed to cater to both the bar’s local regulars and its many overseas patrons with interesting queries that cover trivia from around the globe. Teams which may vary in size between two to eight participants are asked five sets of 10 challenging questions, and though the topics change depending on quizmaster, Morne from Dreadful Productions, participants can expect to be grilled on everything from geography and history to weather, music and movies.
And the FREE Tuesday affair is not your traditional, one-dimensional pub quiz either. Rather than just tossing out standard questions, the organisers at Forex, create unique challenges by making use of song snippets, cryptic images and audio clips from popular films and television shows. It makes the competition that much more interesting and the prize for the victorious team at the end – a R200 pour-your-own-beer card at Forex, as well as the a bigger league at the end of the month which could win you a R1000 bar tab, as well as a hamper for your team, so choose your team wisely!
Interested parties would do well to arrive a little earlier to make the most of the second-storey joint’s happy hour special. Running from 6pm to 7pm daily, and Wednesdays from 6pm to 12am, this great deal slashes the prices of classic cocktails and beers vodka, and brandy mixes, ciders, Mojo Jam Jars, tequila, Jagermeister and so much more! And, of course, peckish quiz enthusiasts can also fill their tummies and stimulate their brains with an assortment of tasty American influenced and locally infused bar bites including curly fries, battered pickles, spicy shrimp tacos to name but a few!
Plus, The Forex Bar is simply a great spot to spend a Tuesday evening – it boasts an uber laidback, lived-in atmosphere, a cosy interior with a fireplace and a large enclosed deck that offers great views of the suburb.
So, if you’re the sort that gets a thrill out of deciphering questions like ‘which movie is associated with the famous line “you talkin’ to me”?’ and ‘which six African countries does the equator pass through?’, be sure to ease into your workweek at this lively pub. Table bookings are advised and there’s no entry or playing fee either, so all you need to do is arrive with your thinking cap on. Should you wish to make 100% sure you get a table, just call +27 (0)21 448 0083 in advance.
Tip: If you’re the sort that prefers to exercise your drinking abilities rather thinking skills, visit The Forex Bar on Thursday nights when the pub hosts its beer pong competitions! Entry to the popular drinking event is FREE and commences at 9pm.
