Savour the moment at 15 on Orange
Savour restaurant at the 15 on Orange hotel offers world comfort cuisine
Interesting light installations catch my attention as my partner and I are seated at our dinner table. We’re at Savour restaurant inside the 15 on Orange hotel, a modern, boutique style five star hotel in Cape Town. From my seat, I can see three glass lifts leading to the five floors above me – 129 luxury hotel rooms, penthouse residences and the Suntra Spa.
As we peruse the starter menu, we are served different kinds of bread with butter and a tomato paste. Delicious. The menu is presented in a red and black leather binding, in the same design as the carpet. The wine list offers a good variety of South African red and white wines as well as Rosés and champagne.
Talking about design: here, design plays a big role. You get a cosmopolitan feel, that’s for sure. The black leather chairs don’t only look good but are more than comfy. The white tables, place mats and interior of the restaurant as well as the hotel portray one signature style developed by Source (an international design company). Many would use the word 'contemporary'. The restaurant is not a closed room but rather sits inside the hotel and is something I would call an open plan restaurant.
Executive Chef Michael Meyepa and Executive Sous Chef Maritz Jacobs put all their time and passion into creating a food offering that everyone, from everywhere in the world, can enjoy. Michael Mayepa cooked his way around the world for seven years before taking charge of the global menu at Savour. Since it is situated inside a hotel, the idea is to appeal to a cross section of local and international guests.
"Michael’s thinking is based on his travels," says Maritz who enjoys working with Michael and his wealth of experience. Both Asian and very classic international meals are cooked by the 22 chefs at the hotel.
"The menu offers something for everyone; we are flavour and product driven," adds Maritz.
World Comfort Cuisine
For starters I have Thai Style Mussels (R70), a spicy combination of mussels, coconut milk, lemon grass, coriander pesto and grilled ciabatta. My partner decides on the Antipasti Platter (R80) with cured meats, artichoke hearts, roasted peppers, marinated olives and buffalo mozzarella. There’s also a choice of Seared Beef Carpaccio, Steak Tartare, Maryland Crab Cake and Prosciutto di Parma (R70 – R90).
The main course menu is wide: from salads (R60–R120) to soups (R60–R85), pasta and risotto (R75–R110) as well as seafood (R110–R160). We decide to stick to the meatier menu. The portions are big and we are more than satiated after sharing the Roasted Rack of Karoo Lamb Dijonnaise (R135) and the Beef Tornados (R175) from the broiler.
Dessert is not needed, but we follow up on our temptation to indulge and have the Vanilla Creme Brulee (R55) anyway. That’s after deliberating over choices of Raspberry Soufflé, Chocolate Assiette, Sorbets and other delicatessens from the Cassis Bakery in the Garden Centre.
Give Savour a try for an international dining experience that is bound to please everyone’s individual tastes. Sundays are known for their abundant lunch buffet (R245 pp), which, as manager Anchön says, "is something for all of the five senses".
