Fuego Latin American Taqueria in Sea Point

The taqueria that serves up tasty taco bowls, ceviche and churros

Situated in the heart of the bustling Regent Road, the yellow box popping from the La Rhone building is home to traditional Latin American dishes served in true New York style tacos.

Fuego meaning ‘fire’ in Spanish is also a colloquial way of saying ‘that’s hot’, which is quite fitting since spice and flavour is closely linked to the Latin American method of cooking.

Fuego offers five tacos on the menu: Pollo Taco, which is grilled chicken with pico de gallo (chopped up tomatoes, coriander, a touch of lime) and radish; Carne, which is steak with chimichurri sauce and white onions ; Vegetales, which is avocado spread with black beans, chargrilled corn and crispy sweet potato in a corn beetroot tortilla; Pescado, the grilled fish of the day with pico de gallo and salsa verde; and Cerdo, which is pulled pork with pickled onions. You can also tuck into a side of their signature ceviche or Corn Off The Cob.

The taco joint serves homemade salsas as primary sauces: Fuego One (a mild salsa), Fuego Two (a hotter salsa option), made fresh every two days. Eventually, Fuego Three will be introduced, which is intended to be an even spicier blend of salsa.

The South African Head Chef, Victoria Dunbar, recommends the Queso Empanada as a starter. This is the lightly fried bread dough, stuffed with mozzarella and sautéed onions with a side of Sikil Pak salsa (toasted pumpkin seeds and tomato). The chorizo and eggs is the brunch recommendation. This dish comprises Spanish sausage scrambled with eggs, served on a crispy tostada (a tortilla grilled crispier than a taco) topped with salsa and crispy seasoned potatoes.

All of this deliciousness is prepared in a polished little spot decorated with oak, marble and a touch of copper.

Round up your meal at Fuego with the delicious Taco Sundae. Made with a tortilla, ice-cream, chocolate, berry coulis (sauce) and chocolate sauce, topped with mouth-watering caramel brittle, this delicious concoction will leave you with a chocolate high!

Note: Fuego offers a lunch special including a starter and a taco for R95. This deal is available Tuesday to Sunday between 12pm and 3pm.
