Fun Car Hire Cape Town |
Last modified 7 May 2018
Fun Car gets it. The people behind the budget rental company realise that freedom in Cape Town comes in the form of four wheels and a wallet stuffed with cash. And thus, they’ve gone to great lengths to make a selection of affordable autos available to penny-pinching holidaymakers and those from abroad travelling here on a shoestring.
True to its name, the cheap car hire agent wants Mother City visitors to have fun, without having to worry about reliable transit and the high costs that usually come with it. So, those in the market to save a buck or two can get behind the wheel of one of Fun Car’s vintage vehicles for a fraction of the price typically associated with car rental.
Though the company is most famous for its 15 old-school Volkswagen (VW) Beetles, its retro fleet also comprises fuel-efficient Mazda 323s (Stings), spacious Subaru Outbacks, reliable Citi Golfs, VW Polos, Kia Picantos, the Toyota Yaris, Chevy Sparks and even Jeep Cherokees and Mercedes-Benz C-Classes that have automatic shifts (a real plus for American tourists or businesspeople).
Though, if you really want to cruise the streets of Camps Bay or hug the bends of the legendary Chapman’s Peak Drive in style, you’ll opt for one of the two Fun Car VW Beetle Cabriolets. For those who don’t speak petrolhead, that translates to Beetle convertibles. Similarly, owner Deon Goosen has only good things to say about a 1962 baby blue Beetle that he’s nicknamed Ouma (the Afrikaans word for ‘grandmother’). These get snatched up fast, so be sure to book well in advance if you’re interested.
The cars are available for both short-term and long-term rentals, and the daily price is inversely proportionate to the number of days you rent for (there is a seven-day minimum rental period required between October and March). Comprehensive insurance is included, the vehicles come with unlimited mileage (excludes petrol) and pick-ups within 15km of the city centre are free of charge – just schedule with Deon before you arrive. Even airport transfers can be arranged at an extra cost.
So, while some of the slightly dated Fun Cars may not be lookers, one thing’s for sure: you’ll have a grand time zipping around Cape Town, spending all the money you’ve saved by choosing this cheap car rental company.
Note: Fun Car Hire has come up with the perfect alternative to keeping your car fresh and clean in these dry times… A waterless car wash.

Specials and Discounts: Deon is the kind of man you can bargain with. He’s known to give discounts to those who can pay for long-term rentals upfront in cash (security deposits can be paid in cash or credit card). He also gives CapeTownMagazine.com readers a 5% price break every year during the winter period (April - May) - the discount only applies to normal winter rates.
Free km: Fun Car offers unlimited mileage (excludes petrol) as well as 24-hour roadside assistance. Do note that those driving Beetles need to stay within 100km of the city limits, and those renting other vehicles need to stay within 150km of the city limits.
Booking: If interested in renting a car from Fun Car, visit Funcar.co.za, email info@funcar.co.za or phone +27 (0) 73 442 4273 for more information.
