Cape Town's District Six revisited at the Roxy Revue Bar

The Amazing StepSisters re-introduce you to Motown

From the 1960s Motown ruled the airwaves as the legendary music label catapulted the careers of unknown musicians and singers into the music hall of fame.

Infused with a distinct gospel influence, the sound of Motown encompassed R&B, soul, hip hop and pop to form a unique style of music.

The Step Sisters re-introduce you to this world, one song at a time, by adding a little South African flair to American classics in Dancing in the Streets at the Roxy Revue Bar.

The Amazing Step Sisters are Titi Tsira, Tarryn Lamb, Carmen Maarman and Salome Damon – four multi-talented women from Cape Town, each of whom has been performing for many years.

In Dancing in the Streets the Amazing Step Sisters put the spotlight on the music of the glamorous divas of Motown who epitomised the era with their powerful voices and big presence. Their mixture of soulful and angelic voices will have audiences bopping along to the likes of Dianna Ross and the Supremes, Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin.

The show, which brings up common themes about racial repression in the South African music industry and apartheid South Africa, will reverberate with South African audiences.

The show puts a strong focus on Motown’s ability to make the ordinary extraordinary and to give the common man a chance to showcase their talents. Given the shows themes it seems fitting that it be on-show at the Roxy Revue Bar in Grand West’s “The District.’

Replicating the unique vibe of Cape Town’s Old District Six, with buildings inspired by those found on the original streets, ‘The District’ lies at the heart of Grand West’s dazzling nightlife and forms an important part of the entertainment at GrandWest Casino in Cape Town.

‘The District’ pays homage to the culture and vibe of District Six in Cape Town. Known for its vibrancy district six was home to many great black South African artists who kept the streets abuzz with music and entertainment.

Revisit the era with the Amazing Step Sisters as they bring you hits like ‘I’m so excited’, ‘At the carwash,’ ‘My guy,’ and ‘I’m every woman.’

Dancing in the Streets will be showing at the Roxy Revue Bar, GrandWest from Thursday 11 June to Saturday 1 August 2009. Doors Open at 20h00 and curtain rise is at 20h30.
