The clash between Manchester United and Ajax Cape Town at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, 21 July 2012 is bound to be chaotic, but your travel arrangements on the day don’t have to be nearly so helter skelter.
The Fan Walk will be open from 12pm; thus, there’s plenty of time to saunter to the stadium under your own steam. Alternatively, MyCiti event shuttles will run to the stadium from 12pm, cyclist lanes with be open (biking is encouraged), and drop-and-go areas will be designated.
In partnership with the City of Cape Town, what follows is everything you’ll need to know about transport options and road closures.
Getting to the Cape Town Stadium
There is no parking available at the stadium; spectators are advised to make use of the various public transport options available, standard fees apply to scheduled transport.
Event shuttles from UCT, Hout Bay and the MyCiTi Civic Centre bus station will be free on presentation of a valid match ticket; busses will depart at 12pm and every 15 minutes thereafter.
Ticket holders with disabilities
People with disabilities need to formally request access to the P5 area within the stadium precinct (off Vlei Road). Contact Mike Franck at mikefranck@mweb.co.za for details on access. Alternatively, dedicated parking on DF Malan Drive has been allocated for those who wish to use the Stadium shuttle. Please make sure the official disability permit is visible.
Drop-and-go
There are drop-and-go locations at DF Malan Drive (opposite the Artscape Theatre) and the embayment off Helen Suzman Boulevard between Vlei Road and the elevated traffic circle at Granger Bay Boulevard.
On-street in the CBD
Parking tariffs apply in the CBD until 1pm, thereafter it is free to park on-street; though, no additional security will be provided.
Parking restrictions in Green Point
Parking restrictions in residential areas adjacent to Cape Town Stadium will be enforced from midnight to midnight on Saturday, 21 July 2012, including Main Road. Please obey road signage and normal restrictions and charges apply to kerbside parking on a Saturday. There are at least 3 500 parking bays available at the V&A Waterfront to the general public -normal parking rates apply.
Pedestrian and cyclist routes
The fan walk will be open for all attendees coming from the Civic Centre bus and Cape Town rail stations. All roads intersecting the fan walk will close after 12pm to accommodate the increase in pedestrians. With bicycle racks at the eastern side of the stadium, cyclists are encouraged to make the trek on two wheels. Bicycles are left at owners’ risk, and cyclists must provide their own chains and locks. In the spirit of “ride safe”, cyclists are urged to wear a helmet, reflective gear and have sufficient lighting; however, please note that helmets are not permitted inside the stadium.
Travelling by train
The trains will run to and from the CBD according to the normal schedule and passengers are required to pay the standard tariff. Parking fees vary according to venue.
MyCiTi service: Civic Centre to Table View, Waterfront and Gardens
Standard hours of operation and fees for the MyCiTi service between the Civic Centre and Table View bus stations apply. Passengers are required to use the MyConnect card. Road closures in light of the Manchester United and Ajax Cape Town match
Ebenezer Road between Prestwich Street and Somerset Road is open for local access only, no through traffic will be allowed from 12pm to 7pm.
