Things to do on a Monday in Cape Town

The week’s just begun, don’t give up hope just yet

Mondays in Cape Town don’t have to be a drag (unless of course you prefer to wear drag). Below you will find a list of cool things to do in Cape Town on a Monday.

Spur’s two-for-one burger special
Woosh! That was the sound of the weekend that just passed. Monday evenings needn’t be mundane, but if you just can’t side step the melancholy of it all, being gluttonous usually works. The two-for-one burger special at Spur may be a bit of a cliché – but it’s a favourite. Many of us can remember crawling under the tables, joining the highly advertised secret tribe, squealing at the abundance of helium balloons and stealing as many peppermints as humanly possible on the way out. These habits are hard to shake.

Comedy at Zula Sound Bar
It’s Monday and you probably read the Sunday Times yesterday. If local politics aren’t your kind of humour, then Zula has just what you need. Top quality South African stand up comedians, cheap drinks, cheap pizzas, cool crowd and eclectic music. Remember Zula has moved – further down Long Street and the new venue is now as big as the Kimberly hole.

P.S. Make sure you have your wits about you if you sit in the front row and buy your favourite comedian a beer because they’re usually broke.

Opening times: Monday to Saturday: 11am – 4am

Monday Madness at Rafikis
Rafiki’s is a bit of an institution. The last time I was there a guy broke out into a one man flash mob doing questionable dance moves. But that’s neither here nor there. Monday’s mean half price pizzas and for those whose maths skills are not too hot (myself included) that means you get two pizzas and pay for one. The special is on all day and night, just like the vibe. Have an epic fooseball game with mates and fraternise with the fun loving crowd or go all out and enter the beer pong league.

Opening Times: Monday – Sunday: 09:00 - 00:00

Monday night Madness at Mercury
Monday nights at Mercury means you’re missing lectures, or that you don’t hold down a serious job. It’s almost always packed and drinks are so cheap, even cheap people buy other people drinks. Monday nights feature live bands downstairs from 22:00 – 24:00 and then electro and dubstep. Upstairs plays a smorgasbord of favourites from Nirvana to Prodigy and everywhere in between Mercury is situated in what the creatives like to call The Fringe – here’s a nightlife guide for the area.

Did you know Mercury Live and Lounge used to be two separate clubs? The Jam and District 206 was a starting point for many South African greats including, The Springbok Nude Girls.

Answer one of the quick spot prize questions correctly and win your entire team a round of drinks. The pizza is great and there’s an extensive wine menu as well as an ‘80s disco’ dance floor that lights up. Entry is R15 per personand starts at 10pm sharp.

Swingers Jazz Club
Swingers Jazz Club is a Cape Town institution and has seen most Capetonian jazz artists perform there at some time or another. There’s a top notch house band as well as visiting local musicians. Tip: it’s one of the few places that stays open until the sun rises.
