Creatives are drawn to the Mother City like moths to a flame, not least of all because of the Open Design Festival Cape Town, which is set to take over the Mother City for 13 solid days from Sunday, 13 to Friday, 25 August 2017. The event invites innovators, educators, entrepreneurs and ordinary citizens to unite in their universal appreciation of design.
Cape Town City Hall will be the base of the festival. Various venues around the Mother City will also play host to a number of different pop-up shops, open days, workshops and more. The main events – dialogues, dynamic exhibitions and films – will be taking place in the second week. The venues of some of the events are yet to be confirmed. Expect to hear talks by loads of local talent, and take part in forums with them. Some of these include presentations by architect Prof Andre van Graan, who will lead you on a building tour around Cape Town’s city centre and show you examples of outstanding architecture moderne. Game designer Abigail “Tenshimon” Kwan will share her experiences of being a woman in an industry dominated by men.
The multidisciplinary city-wide affair also aims to provide an educational, informative and inclusive platform that designers can use to illustrate the significance and relevance of their work, as well as to share their experiences and build relationships.
This all-inclusive festival aims to get people from all walks of life involved and talking about design in the Mother City. So make space in your calendar for at least one of the festival’s events and get inspired (you’ll have 13 days to choose from). With talks, workshops, exhibitions, parties, conferences, educational programmes, competitions, movies, public activations, design tours, open studios and galleries, and much more, your design addiction is sure to be satisfied.
