Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant

Cape Winelands Cuisine

This is a must-visit. At Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant in Franschhoek, very foodie people did many years of research to create what you can enjoy: regional Cape Winelands Cuisine – dating back centuries, they have a cookbook, which dates back to 1700 (still in use). All ingredients used in the restaurant by chef Chris Erasmus and his team are local and many are made on the premises. Each dish comes with a story, and the friendly waiters are happy to tell them.

Sit inside or outside on the wooden deck and enjoy simple and stylish décor. People here have good taste. The name of this restaurant was inspired by the artist Jacob Hendrik Pierneef (1886 – 1957). His creativity in portraying the beauty of the South African landscape and architecture is depicted by this restaurant's creativity in offering traditional cuisine inspired by centuries of creativity in cooking – referred to as Cape Winelands Cuisine. 'Unique food styles and a variety of flavours are served seamlessly together to create a fresh experience' states the menu. Speak to Hetta van Deventer, the culinary brain behind the restaurant, she knows what she‘s talking about.

The Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant is not just a dining experience, but also a visual experience. Next door to the restaurant you‘ll find the La Motte museum for a cultural-historical experience, with displays aspects of the Rupert family, focusing on Dr. Anton and Mrs. Huberte Rupert and the musical career of Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg. Also featured, is the the history of La Motte and its buildings, with a brief review of Cape Dutch architecture, supported by photographs from that era. The largest room in the museum is dedicated to the life and art of one of South Africa's greatest masters, Jacob Hendrik Pierneef, including part of the family collection previously owned by Pierneef's daughter, Marita. A selection of works by other South African artists can also be seen (Tuesday to Sunday 9am – 5pm).

Another lovely element is the farm shop where you can buy freshly baked breads as well as flowers, ceramics, prints and more. La Motte has plenty of space for children and welcomes families. It’s the perfect destination for a sunny weekend day.
