An Epic Race for Township Children
Four Cape Town Cyclists to Take on Africa's Biggest Cycling Event for Charity
Four courageous Capetonians are hoping to generate good news for South Africa, as they attempt a serious adventure and challenge at the Cape Epic, from 21-28 March.
Also known as the Magical and Untamed African mountain bike race, it is one of the biggest international bike races in the world and has placed Africa firmly on the international cycling map.
The cyclists, collectively known as the Reeds Cape Epic Team, hope to raise public awareness and funds for the vital work being done at the Amy Biehl Foundation Trust – which provides support for township children.
A virtually undefeatable challenge
Mike Powell, 32, General Manager at Reeds, and Donald Christy, 47, Operations Director at Reeds, together with partners, Alex Kruger,40, an IT Specialist, and Ian Seggie, 47, a well respected anaesthetist, form the team.
Whilst Donald Christy is no stranger to the race, having participated once before, the other men will take a voyage into the unknown. The race includes 16000m of climbing and traversing 900 kilometres of dirt roads and other difficult terrain.
A charitable cause
The fearless riders have subsidised their own costs, which amount to between R30 000 and R50 000 per rider. They hope to raise R100 000 for charity.
Their chosen beneficiary is named after American Full-Bright scholar, Amy Biehl, who was the victim of political mob violence in Gugulethu, 1993. The foundation currently benefits over 1000 children via its development programmes.
