Franschhoek Boutique Hotel, Le Quartier Français has raised nearly R50 000 in aid of StreetSmart South Africa, the non-profit organisation dedicated to social development and educational upliftment for street children.

Established in Cape Town, in 2005, StreetSmart raises money via 63 participating restaurants in central Cape Town, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Somerset West. Restaurants display a StreetSmart card on each table, informing patrons that a voluntary R5 donation can be added to their bill.

The registered Public Benefit Organisation and Non Profit Organisation raised just under R4 million, since its inception. Six beneficiaries include; Learn to Live, Ons Plek, The Homestead, Youth Empowerment Action (YEA), Home from Home in Vrygrond, Cloetsville and Kayamandi.

"We are proud to be supporters of StreetSmart and it has made a huge difference to our community," says owner of Le Quartier Français, Susan Huxter, "Our staff is committed to raising the funds and we are motivated by the generosity of our guests and their willingness to contribute to this initiative."

Executive chef Margot Janse was one of 20 award-winning chefs who contributed to a cookery book and restaurant guide, On a Plate, in aid of Streetsmart. Narrated and self-published by Jess Meredith-Watts and Reach Publishers (South Africa), the cookbook presents relatively easy-to-make, three-course menus and signature dishes, made from readily available ingredients.

"Our long term goal is to have a Streetsmart in every town and city that has more than five restaurants who are willing to be Streetsmart," explains Chairperson of Streetsmart South Africa, Margi Biggs, "Everyone who can afford to dine at a restaurant should have the opportunity to help achieve this."

If your favourite Capetonian restaurant is not Streetsmart, ask them why now? For more information on becoming a  Streetsmart restaurant or to make a donation, contact Streetsmart +27 (0)21 418 0621.
