Unique Stamps of Nelson Mandela

Unique South African stamps of Nelson Mandela to mark his 90th Birthday

The South African Post Office will be unveiling a limited number of unique South African Nelson Mandela stamps to mark the former President’s 90th birthday.

Denominations for both domestic and small international letters will be made available at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The stamp for international small letters will costs R4.90 and depicts artwork by South African artist Cyril Coetzee.

Costing R2.05, the photo on the postage stamp for domestic letters and packages was taken by famed photographer Halden Krog.

The life of former South African President Nelson Mandela has been extensively documented on stamps and philatelic products.

Stamps that were launched to mark his inauguration as President went on to become the best sellers in the history of the Post Office, and were followed by a stamp booklet titled “The Many Faces of Nelson Mandela”.

Post Office chairperson, Vuyo Mahlati said he believes that stamps are often an indisposable documentation of history and of heroes, both past and present. “We are proud to be part of this historic event," said Mr Mahlati.

Mr Mandela has received more than 200 local and international honours. These include the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, the Order of Merit and the Order of St John from Queen Elizabeth II and the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush.

The world peace icon is always remembered by his words: “The growth, consolidation and sustained health of our democracy are the responsibilities not only of leaders, but of each and every citizen.”

These stamps celebrating our Madiba's 90th birthday will be available at all Post Offices countrywide.

The whole world celebrates the life of Mandela and we will do anything to make it special for him.
