Cape Town’s first mobile masseurs promises to leave a productive team behind
Upon the arrival of the bright yellow van at our Long Street establishment, a buzz in the air arose as the CapeTownMagazine team awaited a well-deserved treat from the mobile masseurs of The Massage Truck.
Manager and partner of the unique mobile massage service, Jacqueline Kotze enters the limited space with ease, setting up the massage chairs, massage oils and a board with a welcome message, personalizing the space and experience. At first Jacqueline greets us with a smile and directs us to the massaging chair, where she starts the session off by checking whether I’d want a deep tissue massage (more pressure) or a relaxing massage (less pressure). Jacqueline then begins with a head massage, working her way down to the neck, shoulders and back. As Jacqueline finds the tension spots on my body, without my direction, she intensifies her massaging motion, rubbing out the knots, and checking in every now and then to find out if I am comfortable with the manner in which she caresses my body. Suffice to say, those few minutes made me forget about my troubles, realizing the effect of a stressful life on the body and I quiet down the mind once again to fully emerge into the experience.
This unique-to-South-Africa concept came about with owner Patrick Northcoombes’ extensive travel experience, and a similar project in Dubai was the defining moment when Patrick decided to bring this concept to the streets of Cape Town, incorporating various cultural practices which were adjusted to match the needs of Cape Town. “Cape Town is such a hard working city,” says Jacqueline. “We’re aiming for people to be less stressed with the support of their bosses and The Massage Truck.”
The Massage Truck makes their rounds from big businesses to smaller companies, from sporting events to bachelorette parties and their unpredictable pop-up locations. “Coming from a sporting background, I know the benefits of massage and relaxation, and in turn, their effects on productivity,” exclaims Jacqueline with sincere concern. The Massage Truck does their best to streamline the process of time per employee, set up and disruption, in order to create an experience that will be beneficial to all involved, while minimising the disruption and time away from their desk, “and even if you can’t leave your desk, we can do massages while you’re there too,” says Jacqueline. So there’s really no excuse to not participate in this mutually beneficial service.
Note: Check out The Massage Truck on Facebook to find them at markets, festivals, beaches, in the CBD, on the mountains and so many more locations in and around Cape Town!
Tip: The more you do it, the better the effects are for employees and productivity in the workplace. Companies can sign up for six months and receive a generous discount!
