Only a scenic two hour drive from Cape Town, over impressive Du Toits Kloof Pass, past Worchester and through the picturesque Hex River Valley, life might seem as it was hundreds of years ago here in the Cape.
Aquila Private Game Reserve is situated in the Karoo Mountains, in a unique Renosterveld and Mountain Fynbos landscape. The countryside here is a kaleidoscope of breathtaking oranges, greens, browns and golds.
This malaria free, four star private game lodge is the only authentic Big 5 game reserve in the Cape. Chances are you'll encounter many, if not all, of the Big Five: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino.
Special and romantic accomodation
This 4,500 hectare reserve has seen many a famous face including; Margaret Thatcher, Luke Perry, Tyra Banks and Kerry McGregor. Following in their footsteps, why not take an overnight safari, for a special and luxurious game lodge experience.
Aquila Private Game Reserve's exclusive cottages are cosy, have outside showers, sleeps two people, and situated close to the river (watch out for buffalo at night outside), whilst spacious, Afro-contemporary, family cottages sleep up to 7 and have delightful attic rooms for children.
The premier chalets are (even) more romantic. Situated on the slopes of the hills overlooking the reserve they have ‘waking up in nature’ feel. All the chalets feature four poster beds, large baths set into rock, romantic outside showers and a range of complementary, eco-friendly cosmetics.
Waking up to a sunrise over breathtaking landscapes
Take advantage of the outdoor show, then warm up with a coffee. The spacious restaurant at the lodge (built in September 2009, from natural materials, also found on the reserve, like rocks, thatch and wood) offers sumptuous buffet breakfasts, luncheons and dinners, whipped up by local chefs and scheduled at specific times to fit in with all activities taking place on the lodge. Whilst eating a hearty breakfast or lunch, you might notice Muisvoëls and Swallows flying around.
Enjoy your meal outside and catch a glimpse of crocodiles and other game, whilst enjoying the view of the mountains. During the summer months, an outside Boma plays host to a huge fire, where you can spend time star-gazing, enjoying African cuisine and occasional entertainment.
Or, refresh yourself by one of two swimming pools on a hot day. The first of the two pools, situated in front of the restaurant, is one of the largest swimming pools at any safari lodge. There is also a cocktail bar on hand, from November to March every year.
The resort boasts a brand new children's section, complete with a putt-putt golf course, quad bikes, pony rides, games consoles, a paddling pool and arts and crafts. This allows mom and dad to relax next to the pool, or to take a time out, knowing the little ones are 100% taken care of.

There are many unique activities that will warm the heart of any nature enthusiast, including quad bike safaris, horse-back safaris and game drives. Try and stay overnight or just spend the day.
