Alexander Bar and Café
Drink and dial at the stylish new Alexander Bar
Cape Town gets a new gem in the form of Alexander Bar and Café. The brainchild of playwright Nicholas Spagnoletti and Edward van Kuik this new conversation space is filled with old world charm. The new café in Cape Town has a functioning rotary dial telephone system and revolving sofa; Alexander Bar & Café is engineered for playful interaction and conversation.
Warm indirect lighting is provided by dimmed table lamps. With the impeccably selected jazz & world music and a fairly priced range of wines, whiskies, classic cocktails and light meals Alexander Bar is set to become a favourite drinking and eating spot of Cape Town locals and a happy chance discovery for visitors.
Make a phone call … to the table next to you
The new restaurant boasts chocolate brown walls, Persian carpets and eccentric upholstery that is deliciously nostalgic for a past that never was. Dotted around the place are attractive old phones which actually work. The phone system gives permission for people at different tables to engage with each other. The revolving sofa keeps things interesting by delivering fresh faces into a conversation. The messages left on the typewriter range from hilariously puerile to lyrically poetic. The classic bar has decent overhang with corners to camp around. These are all elements that combine to create a space that has warmth, humour and comfort.
No need for sideshows
Alexander Bar is also defined by what it omits. There is no television – no sport, no Fashion TV. There is no live entertainment other than what is provided impromptu by the other patrons. It is not possible to book the entire venue out, so regulars will never pitch up to find themselves excluded from their local.
