Cape Town brunch spots

It's never too late for breakfast or too early for lunch

Brunch takes all the best elements of both breakfast and lunch and combines them into one long, lazy meal that stretches into the early afternoon. It can be a light, bubbly affair or it can include some serious eating (followed by a nap), either way Capetonians do it well. Here are some of our favourite spots for brunch.

Mint Restaurant
Brunch runs from 11am-3pm on Sundays and the menu includes Franschhoek smoked salmon and scrambled egg croissants or steamed idli with sambar and chutneys, together with a small selection of desserts and children's options. Enjoy in a relaxed terrace overlooking St Georges Mall, while chefs cook up a storm in the open-plan show kitchen.

Knife Restaurant
Celebrate the weekend with good times and great food including granola, bubble and squeak, corned beef hash or the soon-to-be-famous smoked ribs. Family-friendly brunch is served from 10am-3pm on Saturdays and Sundays and you can even add a jug of Bloody Mary to your meal if you’re in need of a hangover cure. Knife introduces smoked meat in a sophisticated yet relaxed, Louisiana-style smokehouse.
The Crystal Towers (Hotel and Spa) | Corner Century Boulevard and Rialto Road | Century City | Cape Town | +27 (0)21 551 5000

Winchester Mansions
Start the new week in a state of relaxation at the Winchester Mansions from 11am – 2:30pm every Sunday. You will be greeted with a glass of bubbly and a newspaper and can choose from the extensive buffet as you enjoy the live jazz music. The green, sunny courtyard is the perfect place to soak up the sun, or you can move inside on colder days to Harveys Restaurant with its view of the promenade.

Sotano by Caveau
This beautiful Mediterranean-inspired restaurant is just the place to ease into the weekend. Add fresh sea air to dishes like Israeli-inspired shakshouka (pepper and tomato eggs), and Eggs Benedict, and you have one invigorating way to wake up.
121 Beach Road | Mouille Point City Bowl | +27(0)21 433 1757

Table 13
They may not have a dedicated brunch menu but Table 13’s breakfasts fit the bill and they’re served all day. Far from the simple bacon and eggs that are served everywhere here you’ll find pan-fried potatoes and creamed leeks with your scrambled eggs. They open at 7am on weekdays and close at 4pm and on Saturdays they open at 9am and close at 2pm.

Café Extra Blatt

Stop by this café which originated in Germany for brunch on Sundays and public holidays from 9am – 2pm. They also offer a breakfast buffet from 8am-midday from Monday-Saturday which is worth a visit. From bacon and eggs to fruit salad and pastries you will want to sample all their delicious food.

Savour Restaurant at 15 on Orange
The bubbly buffet at Savour  is the perfect place to spend a lazy Sunday. It starts at 12:30pm and goes until 3pm so it’s a good one for those of you that need your Sunday lie-ins. The food reflects the times of day so you won’t find the more breakfast orientated items but starters like the freshly shucked oysters with lemon and sauce mignonette and the seared beef carpaccio more than make up for it.

The Conservatory at the Table Bay Hotel

Caffé Milano
Here you’ll find perfect pastries, cakes and breads but this little eatery is also known for its Eggs Benedict. Sink your teeth into cinnamon and pecan brioche French toast or sample the baked goods, light authentic Italian pastries from bombolone to torte. Breakfast is served until midday, giving you plenty of time to get your brunch on.

Miss K
Breakfast is served until midday all week except for Sundays when it’s served until 1pm. Try the hangover eggs if you’re feeling fragile -baked cannellini beans with smoky chorizo, fried eggs and feta. There are lighter options too – the fresh fruit salad with granola or the breakfast smoothie, but if you’re feeling decadent try the salmon Benedict. This light, airy space is a perfect summer spot.

Blue Peter
Enjoy the sea view with this breakfast buffet from 7am-10am. There’s a continental spread ranging from pastries to fruit and cold meats as well as the traditional English breakfast items. There is an assortment of Twinings tea to choose from, as well as good quality coffee.
