Waterford Estate‘s 2009 Chardonnay wins award
“The Waterford way is a philosophy that celebrates prosperity, life, food, wine, family and friends” says Francois Hassbroek, the resident winemaker.
Waterford Wine Estate now has one more thing to celebrate with their 2009 Chardonnay being awarded “The best Chardonnay from The New World (Argentina, Australia, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa, USA) imported into Holland under €12.50” (R125).
This is Waterford’s first time winning this annual award from Perswijn, Holland’s largest and most popular wine magazine. The blind tastings were conducted by well known wine writers, sommeliers and journalists who then chose the winner.
All the Chardonnay vintages come from the same vineyard on Waterford Estate, one of the oldest blocks on the 120 hectare property in the Blaauwklippen Valley, and since 2005 it has been registered as a single vineyard by SAWIS. Francois says that due to this, “there has always been uniformity and consistency” in the wines produced.
This is good news for those wanting to try the award winning Chardonnay, as although the 2009 vintage is sold out in South Africa, the 2011 vintage will be released this November. Their wine from 2010 was limited due to the crop losses from the Black South Easter winds in 2009.
The quality of the wine is not reflected in its price which makes it a very popular and fast-selling choice so keep an eye out for the 2011 release and make sure you get your hands on a couple of bottles of this internationally coveted Chardonnay.
Taste the best things in life at Waterford Estate or visit one of the other wine farms in the area.
