De Grendel Restaurant
This historic, picturesque wine farm in Durbanville has added fine dining to its list of fabulous offerings. The result of collaboration between the estate’s longstanding owners, the Graaff family, and South Wales-based Crown Hotels and Restaurants, this culinary gem marries rich heritage with fine fare and spectacular views. An airy, contemporary interior overlooking the vineyards is offset by sentimental touches reminiscent of days gone by. Local flavour is also key to the elegant establishment: renowned Cape-based chef Ian Bergh is committed to using only locally-sourced ingredients and fresh farm produce to prepare the simple lunches and succulent six-course dinners on offer. Enjoy these delicious dishes with suggested De Grendel wine pairings in the dining room or adjacent conservatory.

Orphanage Cocktail Bar
Nestled in the hip and happening city centre, this recently-opened, somewhat off-beat emporium specialises in colourful artisan cocktails, innovative infusions, artistic presentation and an all-round enchanting experience. Swanky, stylish and sophisticated yet simultaneously relaxed, the concept bar also aims to encourage a culture of social eating with a range of mouth-watering platters for sharing. Ideal for a happy hour visit after work, we also recommend popping in on a Sunday afternoon for their bespoke half-price Bloody ‘Dirty’ Mary and a mix of great toe-tapping tunes.

Hudsons Burger Joint - Claremont
To the delight of all southern suburbians, this popular American-style diner has branched out to rest its buns in Claremont. Similar to its sister spots, the focus is on succulent homemade beef burgers decked with innovative toppings, draft beers, delicious milkshakes (think: Bar One and Choc Brownie) and a friendly ambience. Happy (two) hours every weekday is also an appealing plus, and features half-price cocktails, beer and appetizers. Vegetarians are as welcome as their carnivorous counterparts: the ‘Burger of the Month’ for May is the aubergine burger, made with grilled brinjal medallions, tomato relish and feta. Fiction Bar
A solid staple on the alternative music scene, this much-loved night club is finally back and under new ownership after a six-month hiatus. Fans will be pleased to know that the same great sounds can be anticipated, although the setting has been completely revamped. Expect a significantly larger dance floor, refurbished DJ booth, green Astro Turf staircase and unique upstairs ‘daytime bar’ that sports a video games theme. New weekly parties, often with renowned international acts, have also been added to the list - so keep watch of who’s headlining.

Gypsy Cafe
By definition, Gypsies are seasoned travellers, always on the move, always embracing new experiences. This is the core concept behind the latest eatery to grace the colourful streets of Observatory. Although a trusted, basic menu is in place, like the wandering folk, the cafe’s specials roam, changing monthly to reflect the traditional cuisine of a chosen country in Europe, Africa, Asia or the Mediterranean. One thing remains the same though: the food is always refined and bursting with flavour. The unique theme extends to the space’s decor too. Quirky touches - such as fairy lights, drapery and the odd birdcage - lend the space a decidedly bohemian feel. If an intimate escape is in order, this is certainly the spot to stop.
Opening times: Monday – Saturday: 6pm – late
87 Station Road | Observatory | Cape Town | +27 (0)21 448 8336
Chukkachurri
What started as a chilled Argentinean tapas bar has recently evolved into a vibrant, and somewhat secret, addition to Green Point’s underground dance scene. Although tasty morsels are still served, the real draw card of Chukka – as it is affectionately known by patrons – is the top-draw music selection, which is tailored for a slightly older, alternative crowd. Deep house and techno pulses through the venue on Friday evenings, whereas Saturdays are reserved for relaxed indie and 80s beats. So swing by and cash in on the come-as-you-are bar’s night-long drink specials and upbeat vibes. Owner Daniel Toledo’s Italian restaurant, Il Leone Mastrantonio, is also just next door, so why not check in here too on the way past.
Opening times: Tuesday – Thursday: 6pm – 2am; Friday – Saturday: 6pm – 4am

On a Roll
Born from chef Peter Ayub’s desire to do one thing and do it well, this innovative new 50s-style diner is the first in Cape Town to specialise solely in hot dogs. But this fixed focus certainly doesn’t mean that the options are limited: 13 different styles of gourmet ‘dog’ are available with a range of sausage choices – from beef and Bauernbratwurst to Käsegriller and Cabanossi – and a selection of interesting homemade sauces, toppings and garnishes. The dishes are always delicious, the atmosphere always relaxed, and the background tunes strictly rock n’ roll.
Opening times: Tuesday – Saturday: 11:30am – 10:30pm; Sunday: 11:30am – 5pm
78 Durban Road | Little Mowbray | Cape Town | +27 (0)21 685 9916

Word on the street is that the dim sum is also to die for. With quality fare and committed Thai staff, this is the type of space that’ll have you roped in as a regular in no time at all.

Hawks and Hounds
From the creator of Yourstruly, comes the newest edition to Long Street’s café culture. Crêpes and hotdogs are the order of the day at this hip new spot. Enjoy them in the vintage wood panelled space, or simply take them away in their signature brown cardboard triangle. We recommend the chocolate crêpe washed down with a glass of their homemade lemonade (at only R5 a glass).

La Grenadine Petit Hotel
Set in the middle of a bustling neighbourhood, this French inspired boutique hotel is the last thing you’d expect to find when walking through the distressed wooden doors of the hotel. A shady pomegranate tree and the gentle sound of running water provide the perfect place to sip on a cup of tea or catch up on some reading. The rooms reflect old school French country living, and the elegant cosiness is a far stretch from the cold monochromatic interiors that many modern hotels offer.
