Pizza for Charity at Col'Cacchio

Celebrity chefs take on a gourmet pizza challenge for charity

It is the second year of Col’Cacchio’s 6 month (April to September), pizza for charity challenge. Col’Cacchio is known for good pizzas. Well, why not flat breads with an added touch of gourmet, by six, well-known, South African chefs.

Michael Broughton (Terroir), Nicky Gibbs (The Westcliff), Jodi-Ann Pearton (The Food Design Agency), David Higgs (Rust en Vrede), Chantel Dartnall (Restaurant Mosaic) and Franck Dangereux (The Foodbarn) embarked on a pizza adventure beyond their wildest dreams. The result? A culinary masterpiece.

The idea: each one of the six celebrity chefs have created a pizza that will be added to the Col’Cacchio menu, once a month. This year, each chef represented a participating country of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

All you have to do is eat them. R5 of each yummy gourmet pizza will be donated to the Fundraising Arm of the Red Cross Children’s Hospital and 100% of the donations go towards the upgrade of the Burns Unit.

Fantastic idea. Fantastic taste.

September
Pizza Christina by Chantel Dartnell

I went to Col’Cacchio, at 42 Hans Strijdom Ave, in Cape Town’s Foreshore, to taste September’s pizza. A delicious creation by Chantel Dartnall, the youngest chef to ever claim the Prudential Eat Out Chef of the Year Award. Chantel is the head chef at Restaurant Mosaic at the Orient: a new addition to the Eat Out Top 10 Restaurants list.

Chantel is known for her adventurous, yet feminine way of preparing food. Chantel’s years of experience and experimentation in the realm of taste have lead her to believe that there are only three basic fundamentals when it comes to being a Chef - passion, consistency and simplicity.

September’s pizza is called Christina and represents Denmark. It’s a thin base with smoked, chopped salmon, baby potatoes smothered in Basil Caper Dressing; and topped with pink Lump fish, sour cream, crispy capers, spring onion & dill.

This pizza is the most unusal of the pizza's that are part of the charity challenge. One client was so impressed with the project, he left R1000 with his bill. Alltogether, Col’Cacchio hopes to raise R100.000 for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital.

At the end of the series, Col’Cacchio will have a look at which of the masterpieces proved most popular and contemplate adding them to the menu.

Go, eat out at one of the 17 Col’Cacchio pizzerias across South Africa (8 are in Cape Town) this September and eat pizza for charity!
