Ernie Els Wines to produce two SA Rugby wines for the 2011 World Cup
Ernie Els Wine Estate has been awarded the license to produce two SA Rugby wines in the build up to the Rugby World Cup 2011, which kicks off on the 9th September. The wines will be appreciated by both wine connoisseurs and passionate Springbok supporters, looking for the perfect accompaniment to watch the Boks defend their title in New Zealand.
South African golfing legend, Ernie Els, comments: “I have been a keen supporter of Springbok rugby since I was a small boy, and remain as passionate today. It is an honour and a privilege for Ernie Els Wines to have crafted these wines for all Springbok supporters to enjoy.”
The SA Rugby Red is a shiraz/cabernet sauvignon blend. “Brightly tinted with a purple edge, this wine glistens in the glass. Produced from our superlative 2010 vintage, the strong shiraz component adds spiciness and cabernet sauvignon the richness,” says winemaker, Louis Strydom
The SA Rugby White is a 2011 sauvignon blanc. Strydom describes it as “a fantastic expression of this noble grape variety, revealing flavours typical of grapes harvested from the cooler climates of the Cape. The crisp acidity refreshes the palate and the tropical fruit spectrum is abundant, with a more secondary role played by the grassy, herbal characters common with this grape variety.”
The SA Rugby wines will be available at most major retailers from the beginning of August. The SA Rugby Red will retail from R79.99 and the SA Rugby White from R59.99. Rugby and wine may not be an obvious pairing but as they are two of South Africa’s favorite things this is sure to be a great match.
The Ernie Els Wine Estate excels in wine-making and the SA Rugby wines are sure to be a great addition to the World Cup. Looking for somewhere to watch the rugby?
