10 Questions For: Lunga Mateta-Phiri

As the co-founder of the initiative Creative Nestlings, this ambitious woman uplifts and empowers the entrepreneurial and creative spirit of the youth

1.  How would you describe what you do for a living?

I co-run Creative Nestlings. it’s the kind of company that has potential to change this entire continent as we know it. The type of company that makes you feel scared and excited at the same time. We attempt to help young people in the continent make their ideas happen - make them realise that their power to innovate, change society and make history is big.  What we are trying to do is no joke.

2.  What is your most vivid childhood memory?
I grew up in Khayelitsha, and I will never forget the summer time holidays. Everyone out on the streets, not in the mood to go home, playing hard all day, rocking up at home at 8pm, unbathed and dusty and hungry...fun times.

3.  If you could invite any three people, dead or alive, for dinner, who would they be and why?
God - I would love to know the secrets /reasons of what is life is about. My mom and deceased dad - I need to know if they had a very happy life, if they have realised their dreams and how I can make them proud they had me. 

4. If you ever found yourself auditioning for a music reality TV show, what song would you sing and why?
I once did actually, but I did not make it. I sang Faith Evans ‘Do your Time’. It’s just a nice song to sing for all voice types and pitches. It’s easy to sing.

5.  How would you complete this sentence?
The South African cabinet should include a Minister of EXERCISE, NUTRITION AND OVERALL WELLNESS!!! For obvious reasons O_o

6.  What would you say is the biggest misconception about you?
I don’t even know what the current perception is of me to begin with..so I don’t have an answer to that question. :/

7.  What is your (honest) opinion of Cape Town?

Cape Town as a whole is still as exciting and diverse as it always has been for me growing up.

The different types of people bring variety to my thinking and experiences. But I have to say that Cape Town CBD has grown really cold and unfriendly. There are very few welcoming spaces that are free to access. There is not much to see and experience anymore. It’s just become a strict working environment and a dead zone after 6pm. It’s sad, cos that’s the CBD! But no doubt colour and flavour and fun still exist outside of it.

8.  What's the greatest fear you've had to overcome to get where you are today?
Public speaking (10 or more people in a space freak me out) ..But it’s still a work in progress.

9. What's the one thing you'd like to achieve before you die?
Happiness and contentment.

10.  Which well- known South African personality would you , without a doubt, be able to beat in a street fight and why?nbsp;

Pearl Thusi, cos she's so light skinned; I figure she must bruise easily. Just small little scratches and punches will freak her out I think, and she will run home for cover.
