Locals have always had a sweet spot for the otherwise obscure and now aged musician, but thanks to the recently released Swedish-made documentary ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ – a film detailing the journey of two South African fans who set out to discover their hero’s fate – the vocalist and his career are now in the throes of an impassioned revival. Fans can rejoice as the successful singer-songwriter is now back by popular demand to woo audiences with his guitar skills and poignant lyrics.
Born in Detroit, Michigan to immigrant parents from Mexico, Rodriguez never found fame in the great US of A. The songwriter, now described as a sincere mix of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, simply faded into oblivion in America after releasing two unappreciated albums in the 1970s.
However, halfway across the world, Rodriguez was quickly becoming a household name. Best known (in SA, that is) for making music that channelled both political beliefs and the difficulties faced by the poorest residents of the inner city, Sugar Man and his anti-establishment lyrics became the soundtrack to many local lives during the Apartheid regime; in fact, his music was banned in the country during this tragic time period.
However, there came a time when, with no new music released and no news on his whereabouts, South African fans just assumed he had died, many believing he committed suicide on stage; in one myth Rodriguez is said to have pulled out a pistol and shot himself and in another, he set himself alight in front of a live audience.
Needless to say, it was only when two locals – as recounted by the film – made it their mission to track down the rock legend that it came to light that the icon was not only unaware of his fame, but also – and even better – willing to play live in South Africa.
Rodriguez comes back to our pretty city by popular demand and die-hard fans won’t want to miss out on this spectacular experience.
