Cape Town City’s Coach Celebrates Victory Over Mamelodi Sundowns
Cape Town City pulled off a major upset on Sunday, 30th October 2016, beating Pitso Masimane’s continental conquerors 2-1 at Loftus Stadium.
Eric Tinkler admitted the result was a massive relief for his side, which has been plagued by inconsistency throughout the season. “Obviously beating Sundowns was a very good result,[owner] John Comitis has been reminding me about that since I got back from Tshwane,” Tinkler told reporters at Cape Town stadium. The head coach emphasised the importance of believing they could beat Sundowns in their backyard. “The way I carried myself ahead of the game, and the players; the way they responded, allowed us to go there and collect those points,” explained the head coach.
Fatigue may have played a role, as Sundowns just recently returned from triumph in the CAF Champions League finals, beating Zamalek FC 3-1 on aggregate. City did, in all fairness, play well and were all over “the Brazilians”. Tinkler praised Lebogang Manyama as the midfielder netted two goals on the night.
