Archery Lessons at Thali Thali Game Lodge
Practise your bow and arrow skills under the guidance of one of the best archers in the world at this pretty West Coast wildlife reserve
Many know Thali Thali Game Lodge on the West Coast as the home of a collection of wild animals and of warm hospitality, but what most aren’t aware of is that the tranquil reserve is also base to one of the most gifted archers on the planet, and thanks to the offer of bow-and-arrow lessons, anyone has the chance to learn from him.
Accredited archery coach and owner of the lodge Thys van Niekerk has previously shot for the Protea team (South Africa’s national squad), and in 2014, he won a silver medal for South Africa at the World Field Archery Championships. So, he and his wife, Amalia, who’s also passionate about the game, started classes at their Cape farm to help others learn about the ancient sport that’s brought them so much joy.
The 45-minute tutorials are held at the pair’s house on the property and are led by Thys, who, thanks to his background, is able to teach anyone, from complete novices to seasoned bow-hunters, a thing or two about the practice. Lessons begin with a safety briefing and a bit of a theory, and participants are then walked through how to use the impressive compound bow, with all its wheels, pulleys and straps. After the basics are covered, eager archers can rehearse their shooting skills and work on experiencing the satisfaction of hitting the bullseye (larger groups, like corporate teams, can engage in some healthy competition too).
For Thali Thali lodge guests, the classes are a fun add-on activity and a great way to keep the little ones entertained while enjoying family time (children as young as three years of age can go for lessons). But of course, Thys also welcomes day visitors who are eager to learn a new skill or improve their existing archery knowledge.
And if you have the time, you could even follow up the session with a leisurely walk around the lodge. Thali Thali now has hiking trails of 3.5km, 6.5km and 11kms in distance, respectively. This is free to staying guests and R50p/p for day visitors. Either that or enjoy a game drive around the reserve – you’ll see zebra, springbok, ostrich, kudu and more – or with an evening meal at the on-site restaurant, where you can relish the simple pleasure of watching the sun slowly setting over vast fynbos plains.
