Sun, Brews, Music, Food Trucks and Dedicated Kids Area: Take the Family
Kids’ area expands, there are minders and under 12s get in for free at CTFOB
It started as an idea over a couple of beers 10 years ago, and the vibe is so infectious that everyone feels welcome at Cape Town Festival of Beer (CTFOB). It happens over three days, from 29 November to Sunday, 1 December 2019, and each one has a special focus.
Sunday is dedicated to families, and what’s great about this last day is that the festival is more relaxed. Parents can taste-test the brews, while the kids are guaranteed fun under expert supervision.
KIDS PLAY AREA WITH PICKET FENCE AND MINDERS
On Sunday, the kids’ area expands for the kids play in the dedicated area separated by a white picket fence, so the children are visible while parents and guardians enjoy themselves.
Children under 12 get in for free all weekend, but on the Sunday the area has professional supervisors who will look after and play games with them. There are also exciting train rides, entertaining magic shows and other activities such as face-painting.
SO MANY BREWS AND CIDERS TO TRY
This year’s Cape Town Festival of Beer has around 200 beers (and ciders, too) from more than 60 breweries, including limited-edition beers brewed specifically for the festival. From micro- to macro-brewers, lagers to ales, Hey Joe Brewing Company, Lagunitas Brewing Company, Soweto Gold, Old Potter’s Inn And Brewhouse, Jack Black Brewing Company, Darling Brew and other brewers will be represented.
AWARD-WINNING AND FLAVOURED CIDERS
If beer isn’t your fermented beverage of choice, then look out for the Swedish-made Rekorderlig Cider, which comes in a strawberry and lime flavour, or try one of the Loxtonia ciders (winners of the 2018 cider category in the beer judging contest), perfect for a hot summer’s day.
Then there’s the food: Kitchen Cowboys (steak rolls, ribs, etc); Hudsons, The Burger Joint; Love Pizza; The Wicked Waffle; Bali Food Truck and The Southern Smoke are the best culinary matches for beer you can get in this city.
YOU’LL TELL HILARIOUS STORIES FOR YEARS TO COME
CTFOB is one of beer blogger Lucy Corne’s (The Brewmistress) favourite weekends of the year. We'd say she digs the culture and the bucketloads of beer (in 2013, she tasted every single one). There are plenty of activities to keep the energy up, like bachelor dance-offs, beer Olympics, a log roll and karaoke kombi.
And each year, Cape Town-based home brewers club SouthYeasters will decide on the best beers on show in accordance with the Beer Judge Certification Program. Top honours include Best Lager and Best Cider. The weekend is all about good beer, good friends and good vibes, where everyone leaves with a story to remember and anecdotes to share at the Cape Town Festival of Beer.
