Boy Girl Hair Salon
The quirky unisex house of hair offering tailor-made service and tip-top results
HEADS UP: Boy Girl Hair has moved to 5 Jordaan Street in the Bo Kaap.
Most of us didn’t have the good fortune of discovering our calling in our teen years. For Günter Theiss however, owner of trendy unisex salon Boy Girl Hair, cutting and colouring came about as early as pubescent acne and awkward adolescent mood swings.
At the tender age of 13, the cutting-edge stylist spontaneously picked up a pair of clippers and worked his first masterpiece. Having found that he had a talent for it, he soon started snipping family and friend’s hair for some extra cash and has been sculpting eye-catching ‘dos with great fervour ever since.
Günter’s passion for the trade was born out of more than just a love for luscious locks; this charismatic man is driven by a genuine interest in the people who put their hair in his hands. From the day he founded his business, he’s been committed to not just refreshing looks but lifting spirits and revitalising souls.
“I want to make people feel good about themselves,” says Günter, whose ultimate goal is to have customers leave with smiles as bright as their new hairstyles. “It gives me a lot of pleasure to see people happy,” he adds.
Being against running his business like a production line, the quirky hairdresser, supported by two other co-stylists, invests a massive amount of time (think hours) in every client, regardless of who they are, what they’re having done or how much they’re spending. So, one of his many celebrity regulars may be waiting (he tends to the tresses of the likes of Zaki Ibrahim, Jeremy Loops and the Taxi Violence boys), but if Mrs Smith from down the road is in the seat, she’s the only one that matters for that moment.
Though the vibey Cape Town hair dresser offers a full spectrum of services – from cuts, highlights, tints and fashion colours (like the trendy ombré effect) to blowouts, GHD curling and keratin treatments (like the miracle-working La-Brasiliana) – each and every option is carefully tailored to suit customer’s personality and lifestyle. In essence, what you get at Boy Girl Hair is an immaculate look that reflects who and what you truly are.
“No two haircuts are the same,” says the uber enthusiastic Günter (he has about as much energy as a jack russell on a sugar high). “It’s about putting the right style on the right person.”
Although the Durban-born stylist loves to experiment and get creative with his work (he makes a concerted effort to stay on top of the latest global hair trends), he’s just as interested in listening to and understanding clients’ requests – a rare ability and a great comfort to anyone who’s ever had the frustrating experience of asking for 2cm off and losing 20cms instead.
If you, like many Capetonian professionals, can only make it to Boy Girl Hair for an after-hours snip, shave, trim, iron or style, well, Günter and his team will accommodate your busy schedule. The edgy, unpretentious salon works on appointment basis rather than having fixed opening times (hence, it’s not geared towards walk-ins), and the staff are certainly not afraid of a little evening work.
You see, when you realize your dream job at such a young age and with so much zeal, like Günter did, it becomes a leisure activity you indulge in as opposed to a laborious undertaking. And really, let’s be honest, what better hair stylist could there be to craft the ultimate head-turning look than one who feels he’s never really worked a day in his rather interesting life.
Tip: Boy Girl Hair offers a lengthy, heavenly head massage with all its services and treatments, so if you’re in the mood for some pampering on top of your grooming, this salon is your best bet.
Also, remember, as the salon doesn’t really accommodate walk-ins, be sure to phone ahead to make an appointment.
The Bill: The parlour’s prices are definitely very competitive, especially considering the amount of time Günter takes to treat each client and the quality of the cuts, colours and styles. A gent’s or lady’s cut costs R150 or R250 respectively, a ladies cut and colour or cut and half a head of highlights costs R550 and ladies cut & full head of highlights costs R750.
